The Anne Arundel County Police Department proudly commends Broadneck High School senior Kelly Shields for her extraordinary bravery and life-saving actions during a severe crash on Route 50 in late August.
After witnessing a vehicle crushed to the steering wheel, Ms. Shields pulled an unconscious driver from the smoking car, verified his pulse, dialed 911, and cared for him until first responders arrived.
In honor of her heroism, Ms. Shields was presented with official citations from various state and local government leaders at Wednesdayโs school board meeting.
We extend our sincere congratulations and gratitude to Kelly Shields. Her swift intervention saved a life, and Anne Arundel County is proud to count her among its finest community members.

Each year, representatives from our 911 Communications Section select an individual courageously fighting cancer and rally our entire police department to purchase items and donate through an annual fundraiser to show our unwavering support.
This year, we had the honor of standing beside one of our very own: Retired Crossing Guard Coordinator Mrs. Thelma Swigert. During her time with the Anne Arundel County Police Department, Thelma was a pillar of reliability, dedication, and warmth.
When diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer, Thelma faced an extraordinarily tough journeyโenduring six rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, and an additional four rounds of chemo. Through every step of her battle, she embodied incredible strength, grace, and bravery, adopting her guiding motto: "Faith Over Fear."
Today, we are thrilled to share that as of this October, Thelma has been CANCER-FREE for one full year!
To mark this incredible milestone, members of our department gathered today to present Thelma with a donation check raised in her honor. Our goal was simple: to ensure Thelma knows she is never walking this path alone, and that even in retirement, her police family is always in her corner.
Thelma expressed her deep gratitude for the support of her Anne Arundel County Police Family. Looking ahead, she plans to work with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - Chesapeake Region (ovarian.org/get-involved/cheโฆ)to inspire fellow cancer survivors, raise awareness, and motivate others to support this crucial cause.
Please join us in sending love, prayers, and congratulations to Mrs. Swigert! Drop a message of encouragement for her below!
