On this day, in 2011, Pope Benedict raised ACN to the status of pontifical foundation, thereby consolidating the close collaboration between the organisation and the Holy See. ACN continues to serve the Church where it is most needed, always in communion with the See of Peter
The roots of #RedWeek are in Rio de Janeiro, October 2015, when the Brazilian office of ACN decided to illuminate the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in red, to highlight the suffering of persecuted Christians in Iraq.
@ACN_UK took the idea further and created #RedWednesday to commemorate all persecuted Christians on a specific Wednesday in November, and this was later expanded to a whole week in many countries.
This year 130 cathedrals and a thousand churches and buildings across different continents will take part in Red Week and Red Wednesday.

Today we recall the 2018 attack on a bus full of pilgrims in Egypt that left seven people dead, including children.
We ask that the martyrs continue to intercede for peace in Egypt and other countries where Christians suffer persecution.

Why red?
Every year buildings and monuments light up in red for #RedWeek.
Red symbolises the blood of the martyrs and those who suffer persecution for their faith, and is the colour used for ACN's Religious Freedom Report, to highlight the countries where persecution is worst.
This year more than 125,000 people, 130 cathedrals and a thousand churches and buildings across different continents will take part in Red Week and Red Wednesday, to recall the plight of persecuted Christians around the world.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Shahbaz Bhatti's martyrdom in Pakistan. It also marks the 10th anniversary of ACN's #RedWednesday campaign, which has united Christians worldwide in prayer, solidarity, and advocacy for those who suffer because of their faith.
Shortly before his assassination, Shahbaz said, “I believe in Jesus Christ, who has given His own life for us, and I am ready to die for a cause.” He remained faithful to those words until his final breath.
As we reflect on his witness, let us ask ourselves: What are we willing to do for our persecuted brothers and sisters?

🧵Persecution in Iran, Nicaragua, India
Arrests of Christians in Iran increased in 2025, with 254 cases reported - approximately double the number recorded in 2024. This has been accompanied by severe judicial outcomes, including exclusion from education, employment and health
Rising religious nationalism and anti-conversion laws in several parts of India are a source of constant pressure on Christian communities. There were over 700 several incidents of violence against Christians across the country in 2025 alone.
You can learn about all this and more in the latest edition of "Persecuted and Forgotten?", published this week by ACN.
