Our Research Lead at the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC), Dr Hesbon Hansen Owilla, is attending Maynooth University Research Week in Ireland alongside two colleagues from Aga Khan University (AKU). As part of the visit, Dr Owilla and his colleagues are exploring opportunities for research collaboration under the Erasmus+ Mobility Agreement between Maynooth University and AKU.
Among the highlights of the week are discussions on innovation and AI and how roles and decision-making are changing in the AI era. Maynooth Universityโs Prof Brian Donnellan and Prof Markus Helfert led thought-provoking discussions on human creativity vs AI. The conversations explored what makes human creativity distinctive, including authenticity, competence, individuality, craftsmanship, innovation and originality.
The engagement provides a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, explore emerging research priorities and strengthen institutional partnerships in research, innovation and knowledge exchange.

This morning, I had a wonderful meeting with Mr. Amin Mawji, the AKDN Diplomatic Representative in Uganda, to discuss their ongoing and future development initiatives.
I strongly commend the Aga Khan Development Network for their extraordinary commitment to Ugandaโs progress, particularly in the key sectors of education, health, and energy.
What stands out most about the Aga Khan institutions is their deep-rooted focus on long-term national growth rather than short-term profit.
Their decades of service speak for themselves; from resolving our country's major energy crisis through the Bujagali power project to establishing Air Uganda when we needed a national carrier.
Today, that remarkable legacy continues with major multi-million dollar investments, including modern pharmaceutical manufacturing plants currently under construction in the Namanve Industrial Park and the state-of-the-art Aga Khan University Hospital in Nakawa, set to fully open next year.
We truly cherish this enduring, impactful partnership and look forward to seeing these critical projects transform the lives of our people and drive sustainable socioeconomic transformation across our nation.

Artificial intelligence is growing fast in Tanzanian higher education. Are our policies keeping up?
That question was raised at the opening of the third Five University Consortium (5UC) Conference in Arusha. Deputy Minister for Education, Science and Technology Honourable Wanu Hafidh Ameir said the conversation needed to cover more than what technology can do. It also needed to cover how institutions, policies and governance frameworks should respond.
The three-day conference is hosted by NM-AIST. It brings together Sokoine University of Agriculture, NM-AIST, Aga Khan University, the University of Dar es Salaam and Canada's Simon Fraser University, alongside scholars from across Africa and Europe. The focus is on turning research into policy and practice as Tanzania implements its Development Vision 2050.
"โฆour responsibility is to ensure that knowledge also translates into better policies, technologies and practices that improve lives and protect the environment." said Professor Tania Bubela, Provost and Vice President Academic, Aga Khan University
