Design changes are a major driver of cost overruns and delays in infrastructure projects, but understanding how those changes ripple through complex systems has long been a challenge. A recent study introduces a data-driven framework that maps how modifications propagate across interdependent structural components using geometric differences between initial and final design models: go.asce.org/3UJ74qd. @ASCEPublishing

Many design agreements contain provisions intended to limit the circumstances in which compensation can be withheld. Do those provisions prevent the design-builder from asserting its own delay damages? A recent federal district court decision offers guidance: go.asce.org/4yKB9nj.

122 years ago, New York City's first subway ride departed from a station unlike any other. Known as the "jewel in the crown," City Hall station was designed as the showpiece of the subway system, featuring elegant brass chandeliers, leaded skylights, and vaulted ceilings adorned with colorful tilework. Built on a tight curve that made extending the platform difficult, the station closed in 1945 as growing ridership demanded longer trains and nearby stations attracted more passengers. When New York City's first subway ride departed City Hall station #OnThisDay in 1904, the system consisted of a single 9-mile line with 28 stations. Today, it features 800 miles of track and 472 stations. Learn more about the first major rapid transit subway system in the United States: go.asce.org/4zTDEE. #VisitASCELandmarks

Designing truly inclusive infrastructure starts by listening to the people who will use it. As engineers, architects, and designers develop an accessible playground at Kansas City’s Roy Blunt Luminary Park, they’re drawing on lived experience to help shape a novel public space featuring adaptive play elements, interconnected ramps, and accessible surfaces. Get a sneak peek at the project on the #ASCESource: go.asce.org/4BtK4fx.
