Change brings both good and difficult times. This thought runs through the reflections of people in remote Ladakh, as they draw on traditional knowledge and ways of life to make sense of and reconcile with their present realities in "Stories from the Mountains". Directed by Akash Basumatari, the film is jointly produced by ATREE, Achi Association India and Eliezer Joldan Memorial College, Leh. The region is one of the three landscapes under The Himalaya Initiative, where ATREE is working in close partnership with RIST to conserve biodiversity and foster human well-being. video link: youtu.be/wkFkV_2puTs

As cities like Bengaluru grapple with the interconnected challenges of climate variability, rapid urbanization, and recurring public health crises, it is overdue to advocate for a paradigm shift from reactive disease control toward systemic solutions that promote environmental, human and urban health. This approach does not merely treat the symptoms of urbanization’s impact on public health but seeks to address its interconnectedness, bridging knowledge gaps and fostering resilience through ecological restoration and hydrological balance. We had a memorable evening walking through the Avalahalli Forest in Yelahanka, in search of reptiles and other nocturnal wildlife. Around 35 participants joined us, including enthusiastic young nature explorers, students, photographers and people from diverse professional backgrounds, all connected by a shared curiosity about urban biodiversity. We spotted three snakes, a frog, a gecko and a turtle. We also paused to listen to the call of a jackal. The reptile walk was a chance to slow down, observe, listen, and appreciate the incredible wildlife that exists right alongside us in our city. A big thank you to Surya Narayan, ATREE researcher who led the walk and all the participants who made the evening special!
