Tech guy really wants you to use his computer.
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources “a lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”

You say this as if the current system is not far more corrupt and more broken. We don’t even know how many shares exist relative to how many are supposed to exist. (See the Dole foods case.) Because of the gross brokenness of these ledgers these traditional markets barely even work - and they cave under stress (maker halts of AMC GME) Consumer losses due to naked short selling shenanigans and these broken ledgers dwarf the losses from hacks.
There’s a lot we still don’t know but some observations: - this episode underscores just how unfit for purpose the crypto ecosystem is for mainstream finance. - no, the Clarity Act wouldn’t have prevented this - “tokenizing” stocks on permissionless blockchains is a bad idea

We need an international anti hacking defense alliance that is well funded, borderless, fast, sophisticated and with the most cutting edge tech experts and tools. It should work with international law enforcement to find perpetrators and help bring them to justice.

There’s an interesting side effect of security cameras. Before security cameras were common, punks and anti social people would simply get beat up when they got out of line. Without video evidence it was extremely difficult to prove- so only the worst cases ended up being prosecuted. People would fight much more often / cops would beat people up, people would even fight cops (and not get shot!) and if someone was rude or out of line they’d much lore often get smacked. Net / net it’s a benefit to have the more peaceful general situation we have now. Less street fights is a good thing. However there still is an imbalance in the world - some people actually could benefit from a good ass kicking.
Real people have real emotions. Real people need to stop being f’ed with for your social media pranks and content. Not everyone is living in your fake world. Good on the Red Baron Pizza guy. The world was better when kids had a healthy fear of all adults.

Why is it so easy for hackers to hack yet so hard for law enforcement to catch the attackers?

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

Even though he had such a long life, this seems somehow unexpected. It’s like I took for granted that we’d always have Sir Patrick with us. What a great actor. Patrick Stewart brought us so much. May he rest in peace.

Sounds like Satoshi Roundtable
A founder put 35 of the smartest people he knew in a room in Aspen in 2006. Mark Pincus (@markpinc) called it think weekend. Zuckerberg stayed up all night on Diet Cokes and M&M's, working. Peter Thiel gave a talk on the housing bubble, two years too early. The rule: no small talk, and nobody there to network. "No one was trying to sell anything to anyone." The whole room asked him to run it every year. He said "nah" and ran it once.

I’ve known Patrick well for over a decade and I’ve talked with him about these matters in person several times. There is no doubt in my mind he is telling the truth. The election was rigged. Patrick is a patriot and the news media owes him and the American people an apology.
NEWSFLASH: Dominion CTO Eric Coomer’s libel case against me for saying Dominion’s equipment rigs elections was just thrown out by the judge on summary judgment. Trial was supposed to start next Wednesday, but the judge read our evidence and realized I was correct. No libel.

I get the most done when I’m not busy. I have a mentor who’s a deca billionaire who told me one of his biggest pieces of advice is to go on long walks in the middle of the day. This summer I took a week off staycation around the house and did a few random calls and emails that had more impact than the previous month.

Mamdani inadvertently using libertarian free market talking points. “Less red tape”. Well of course. The problem is that Mamdani believes in big government— and with that comes red tape. Scrap all of this and you’d have a far healthier economy and better prices.

This is so true. We hire artists all the time. I love art. My dad was an artist. I am a massive fan of art and appreciate talent. I go out of my way to support artists. The number of times they simply don’t reply or don’t produce what they agreed to is stunning. It’s sad that the stereotype of absent minded / flaky creative is too often true. There are times when I’m just basically begging to give money to artists for their craft. And our stuff is often fun too - highly creative with tons of freedom and flexibility. I’ve even had times where I’ve told artists they can pick any topic or design they want. I’ve had many times where they agree to jobs then flake out, become unresponsive or are way past deadline. Other times the quality doesn’t come close to their portfolio. Whenever this happens - which is often - it’s a tiny bit hard to have sympathy for artists who complain about Ai or lack of revenue. I think by being disciplined, communicative and on time / on budget with consistent quality an artist can do a lot better than average. Ai is another issue - I think it needs to be embraced by all creatives because it’s such a powerful tool. I don’t think it should be seen as destructive to the creative process but something that should be used.
I am now on month 2 of waiting on a cartoonist to respond to a request to co-develop a recurring comic 1 page idea of mine for a magazine who wants it. It would then be compiled and added to as a book of same. Should I use AI now? I don't want to and probably won't, but this is yet another example of the remoteness of artists which I have encountered time and again in the past. When they feel like it, your project goes forward; and when they don't you're left with no progress on ideas, samples and the immediate fire that inspired it. It's like having a pale of water dumped on you as you're mind is screaming "That's the ticket!"

What a horrible thing to say. This is not only factually untrue it is propaganda pushed by the enemies of America and proponents of forever wars. It seems RFK Jr. is just a great campaigner but lacks depth - this isn’t the first time he’s said something disqualifying. Sad
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Novel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

My old friend was an ultra high level martial artist. World class. He said that few things were more scary to him than a knife in the hands of someone well trained. Take a look at this and know why. Absolutely devastating- no defense but to run or be 18 feet away with a gun.
Martial artist and knife fighting instructor Doug Marcaida shows how lethal a 'karambit' could be in the hands of an expert.

I saw a demo where a regular untrained dude got into protective gear and went against a UFC fighter with a magic marker - the marker represented a knife. Almost every time the regular dude got in lethal strikes before the UFC guy got a knockout in.
