Canada has formally repealed its Digital Services Tax, removing a measure that targeted digital suppliers. CCIA welcomes the repeal and urges USTR to monitor refunds to affected businesses and guard against replacement measures that again single out U.S. digital services exporters. China’s cross-border data rules continue to burden international business with complex assessments, contracts, and reporting requirements. A new certification pathway offers limited flexibility, but strict controls on important data and uncertainty over classification still complicate global cloud services and cross-border operations. CCIA VP Krisztian Katona will present today at the XIII Meeting of the Working Group on Trade and Competition in Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), SELA, and ProCompetencia DR, where he will discuss #competition and regulation in strategic sectors, including digital services.
Digital services taxes in key European markets extracted more than $13 billion from 2020–2025, singling out U.S. companies and exposing them to double taxation. Across administrations and parties, U.S. policymakers have condemned these discriminatory measures. The U.S. should use all available trade tools to protect American exporters and stop their spread. The U.S. digital economy generated a $283.5 billion trade surplus in 2025, underscoring the importance of digital services to American export strength. Yet discriminatory foreign regulations and restrictions on cross-border data flows continue to constrain U.S. companies. CCIA welcomes USTR’s focus on enforcing trade commitments and addressing barriers that limit access to global markets. buff.ly/OV9KFIq

I covered the budget last week and it was noticeable how little discussion there was of AI in the aftermath. I brought it up on TV with a Tory MP who said she'd forgotten to mention it - of course i've done that many times so I am very sympathetic but it felt telling
Anyway, @ccianet have looked in more detail at the OBR's AI figures and even in the most conservative central scenario, AI-related growth is responsible for a third of the Chancellor’s headroom
Securing a clean energy future starts with equipping the next generation. @UTKnoxville is leading a new multi-university consortium designed to close critical workforce gaps in nuclear engineering and train the talent needed to power tomorrow.

As Korea approaches the one-year anniversary of its trade commitments with the U.S., new proposals threaten to undermine market access for U.S. digital services. CCIA, @actonline, Coalition of Services Industries, @SIIA, and @USChamber urge USTR to push back against discriminatory regulations that distort #competition, restrict commercial freedom, and disadvantage U.S. companies in Korea. Protecting Australians online means strengthening security, not creating new vulnerabilities. CCIA is urging lawmakers to preserve strong encryption and ensure online safety rules are clear, proportionate, and effective, protecting children and countering radicalisation without undermining #privacy, #cybersecurity, or access to lawful information. 1/2
CCIA and its members share Australia’s goals of protecting children online and countering radicalisation. But effective policy must address demonstrable risks without creating security vulnerabilities for malicious actors to exploit or imposing unclear obligations on digital services. Safety and security must go hand in hand. buff.ly/6LKUuaK 2/2
CCIA’s submission for USTR’s 2027 National Trade Estimate identifies 12 categories of foreign digital trade barriers that threaten U.S. exporters, from discriminatory platform rules and data localization mandates to digital services taxes, forced revenue transfers, and restrictions on #AI development. Removing these barriers is critical to expanding market access for American technology companies. buff.ly/xvyd0cm

CCIA, along with @NetChoice and @TechNetUpdate, has filed an amicus brief before the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, supporting the use of copyrighted material for AI training. The use of copyrighted material for training qualifies as permissible #FairUse under the Copyright Act and the general purposes of copyright as established in the Constitution. buff.ly/6woeWMH
The EU Space Act could cost U.S. companies billions, weaken American space competitiveness, and give Chinese competitors an advantage. A recent CCIA Research Center study estimated up to $2.8B in lost U.S. exports through 2035. Recognizing existing U.S. practices and international standards could mitigate these costs by nearly $8B.
