Welcome to ClickHouse, @andy_pavlo 👋
We're launching ClickHouse Labs, a new research group advancing foundational database technology, led by Andy as VP of Database Research.
Andy is an award-winning database researcher, professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Computer Science Department and longtime leader of the CMU Database Research Group. At ClickHouse Labs, he'll build a team to take on the hardest problems in database systems, testing their work on real workloads and publishing it in the open, across both ClickHouse and PostgreSQL.

Had a fantastic time speaking at the @CMUDB seminar earlier this week on all the Postgres work we are doing @ClickHouseDB.
We dove deep into WalShadow’s internals. What I found especially interesting was how it handles parallel decoding and uses fencing to manage schema changes. This is one of the primary reasons you can expect very low latency even at high throughput when syncing data from Postgres to ClickHouse. Don’t miss that part.
Hoping some of these ideas could make their way into Postgres core. May be Logical decoding v5. 👀

Slow Postgres? Before adding local copies, think again.

Fast local reads come with synchronization, reconciliation, and more moving parts. What if Postgres on local NVMe could give you the speed without the complexity?
AI agents don’t stop at one query. One prompt can trigger 50 SQL queries, each needing an answer in milliseconds.
That’s the workload ClickHouse is built for: fast analytical queries at high concurrency.
In conversation with @khoslaventures' Sven Strohband (@SStrohband), ClickHouse CEO Aaron Katz (@ceo_clickhouse) explains why agents are raising the demands on databases.

I've been taking @ClickHouseDB managed Postgres and the new WAL Shadow integration for a test drive. This stack gives us the ability to create fully managed databases and then replicate data from Postgres to ClickHouse with sub second performance (~200 ms).
This is more than just another boring ETL mechanism.
With this level of latency, we can build applications where half of a screen or half of a user journey is served from a transactional database, and half is served by an analytical database. One blended application or workflow pulling consistent data from the most appropriate data store.
It also opens up new use cases where we can look at low level event data, and combine it with real time analytics across a whole population. For instance, we can take every trade, and compare it against the 100k previous trades in real time. This could be really interesting for fraud, personalisation or the capital markets.
In the example below, we have an trading scenario. Orders are placed, updated and cancelled for a book of exchange traded derivatives. The current state order book is shown and served out of Postgres. The data is immediately replicated into ClickHouse where analytics are then surfaced on the screen. We are pushing around 2.5k orders per second into a pair of small instances which would cost less than $500 per month.
Great work @saisrirampur and team!

7 / 2 = 3. Sorry, Alexey. ClickHouse 26.10 adds opt-in SQL-compatible integer division for ported queries.
SET sql_compatible_division_for_integers = 1;
The default still gives you 3.5.

ALT ClickHouse 26.10: SQL-compatible integer division. Headline: 7 / 2 = 3. Sorry, Alexey. By default, SELECT 7 / 2 returns the floating-point value 3.5. SET sql_compatible_division_for_integers = 1 makes it return integer 3. With the setting enabled, -7 / 2 returns -3, truncating towards zero; 7 / 2.0 returns 3.5; and 1 / 0 throws an error instead of returning infinity. Disabled by default. Contributed by Ilya Yatsishin.
