New Research: The CIO in 2030: Running the Enterprise Intelligence Economy
thisisfrontier.ai/research/c…
Fourteen operating imperatives for a strategic world where people, agents, software, compute, data, and trust are dynamically allocated to outcomes. #CIOChat

Reminds me of the top-down marketing problem. Announcing a big integrated stack is easy, getting a CIO to adopt one workload without migration is the actual test. Oracle's cross-estate security angle is their strongest card imo.
What a week for @Oracle, which just made one of the biggest AI plays in enterprise tech. But there’s a catch:
Its new AI stack is formidable. However, IMO, the real test isn’t whether Oracle can make Oracle better. It’s whether a CIO running SAP, AWS, or Microsoft has a compelling reason to buy in without migrating anything.
My new deep dive cuts through Oracle’s announcement blitz this week to find the strategic winners, the hype, and the real CIO opportunities.
The next enterprise AI war won’t be won by owning the stack. It’ll be won by delivering value across everyone else’s. My full analysis:

Exactly. In IT today, I believe there should be a graceful transition from project management to product management over time for many key systems.

A4. "Products" are durable loci of value (e.g., a "commercial loan" or "e-commerce hub") and need Product Managers to guide their development. When a step-change is needed (switching from a vendor package to in-house code, or a major feature upgrade), that's a Project.
When I run a Transformation workstream, I add Project Managers up front, and some of them morph into Product Managers as products are built.

#CIOChat Q4: If durable product/platform teams own outcomes long after launch, is “the project” still the right unit for managing IT?
Should the PMO evolve into a portfolio/value office spanning products, programs, capacity, funding and one-off change? Where do you want the PMO heading next?

That's because it's just not relevant any longer.

A3) That's a tough Q. Making a PM responsible/accountable for an outcome is very different than making them R/A for "successful" completion. The sort of "we went through stages 1-5 then assigned a PM, ..." thing can't go on. They need a voice from strategy time on.

(Getting nervous that @waynesadin’s answer to Q4 is taking so long. #CIOChat.)

Amen to that! Making them the bean counters is a terrible waste! #ciochat

A3. A PMO needs to be the "canary in the coal mine" on projects, identifying risks & tracking costs.
Project SPONSORS--who come primarily from the business side--own the benefits & get charged the costs. They also bear the risks: the risk of NOT changing, & the risk of cost/time overruns.
PMO should make recommendations (which carry real weight), but sponsors should make the call.

#CIOChat Q3: 2026 SPM research says ~30% of projects deliver no meaningful ROI or strategic value and orgs that cancel more projects deliver ROI more efficiently.
With spend rampant, should PMOs become capital allocators with real pause/kill authority? What are your kill criteria?

re: PMO -> “Value creation” offices.
In some orgs, I even see them called “Value maximization” functions.
Trying to change the function to the outcome. Which I do understand to a degree. But then no one knows what role it really has.

#CIOChat A2: Most PMOs are becoming "Value Creation" offices and many PM's are facing job loss as roles combine. I see a #Compliance or GR management future for many of them.

"going to become an execution hub"? PMO has been the heart & soul of organizational change initiatives for decades (I built my first in 1996 to oversee Y2K)...no future tense needed.

Agreed! But I would argue the issues are not around the models but the harnesses. Token cost is already commoditizing (e.g. Anthropic)

A2. Overseeing a large project across dozens of vendors, consultants, and employees involves a lot of drudgery just to gather info on burn rate, resources, risks, etc. This often prevents a PM from doing the higher-order work of OCM, lobbying, risk mitigation, etc.
When trying to oversee a PORTFOLIO of interdependent projects, this can be overwhelming.
#AI tools will reduce drudgery & thus allow PMs to do high-value work. It can't happen soon enough!
#CIOchat
#CIOChat Q2: AI can increasingly automate schedules, status, staffing, documentation and coordination. All the machinery that consumed much of project management.
What human work remains: Tradeoffs, sponsor alignment, dependencies, scenarios, risk? What should PMs to stop doing?

Agree about the highest value of PMs...But they often spend way too much time chasing timesheets, reconciling vendor invoices, and typing up meeting minutes. AI tools can free them to focus on the outcome rather than the inputs
