In Sub-Saharan Africa, the median cost of 1 GB of data is 15.3% of monthly GDP per capita for the poorest income quintile. This is well above the Broadband Commission's target of 2% (GSMA, 2021). @aasu_72 @OSISA @A4A_Internet @_AfricanUnion @Zinasuzim @NANSONational
A lack of enabling infrastructure, such as reliable energy, has been a significant barrier to broadband adoption in many African countries. @aasu_72 @OSISA @NANSONational @Nabothnangolo1 @A4A_Internet @Zinasuzim @_AfricanUnion #DataMustfall #Digitaliclusion
Mobile internet adoption continued to increase in 2020, despite the economic recession. Broadband coverage has also increased substantially in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, one in five people live in an area without mobile broadband coverage, an estimated 210 million people.
Internet penetration in most African countries is below the level required for meaningful network effects and considerable economic growth. Due to huge financial gaps, most people in the low-income bracket do not have access to the internet. #DataMustfall #DigitalInclusion
Our team from Malawi engaged stakeholders like @malawi_airtel, @Ministry of Information and Digitalisation-Malawi, and @Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority - MACRA, among others, at the just-ended Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF). #DigitalInclusion #DataMustfall
Six of the ten most costly countries globally for 1 GB of mobile data are in Sub-Saharan Africa, with Equatorial Guinea being the most expensive. Sudan is also the only African country among the top ten most affordable countries globally. #DataMustfall #DigitalInclusion @OSISA
According to a recent analysis, Sub-Saharan Africa ranks first in the world for the most costly data prices. An average of $6.44 for 1GB of mobile data is the most expensive in the continent. #DataMustfall #DigitalInclusion @OSISA @aasu_72 @NANSONational @Zinasuzim @A4A_Internet
Internet access varies greatly depending on a country's relative wealth. 87% of children and young people in high-income countries have internet access at home, but only 6% in low-income nations. #DataMustfall #DigitalInclusion @aasu_72 @OSISA @A4A_Internet @NANSONational
The proportion of students who do not have access to the internet varies from less than 15% in Western Europe and North America to more than 80% in Sub-Saharan Africa. Even for those who do have access, there is still a problem with students' and instructors' digital literacy.
Remote learning strategies failed to reach the most vulnerable or geographically dispersed (rural) pupils due to a lack of household ability to receive digital lessons, an estimated 49% of Eastern and Southern Africa learners could not access digital learning at all. @OSISA
Only 10.4% of South African households and 1.7% of those living in rural areas have access to the internet at home. The digital divide between rural and urban areas remains a concern. #datamustfall #digitalinclusion @OSISA @aasu_72 @A4A_Internet @NANSONational @Nabothnangolo1
