Had someone stop me today to say he lost his brother to alcoholism a month and a half ago. Somehow he found my column from 7 years about the loss of my brother and said it gave him some solace. That was part of the intent when I wrote it.
I’m both glad…and sad that it’s still relevant.

NJ faces a staggering $162.3 BILLION financial shortfall, according to @truthinacct's 2026 report.
That’s a $45,800 burden per taxpayer.
This underscores the need for greater fiscal responsibility, transparency & accountability in Trenton.

It is mind boggling that Governor Sherrill has yet to opt in to the Education Freedom Tax Credit. So far, over 30 states signed on, represented by both Republican and Democrat governors.

If only someone had said something 🙄
In January, I shared my concerns with colleagues about NJ's sweeping e-bike legislation. We were taking a legitimate public safety issue & imposing sweeping restrictions on bicycles that weren't responsible for the tragedies prompting the legislation.
Cycling advocates, small business owners & THOUSANDS of residents objected. More than 8K letters opposing the proposed e-bike restrictions were sent. Sound familiar? (think about the 9.5K objections to NJ's misguided independent contractor rule that whacks over a million legitimate gig workers)
HOW MANY MORE TIMES DO LEGISLATORS NEED TO HEAR FROM THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE THAT A LAW IS FLAWED???
On the final e-bike votes, 10 Assembly members voted NO, 18 didn't even vote, and one abstained. In the Senate, 11 voted NO and another two didn't vote.
Here's the deal: in the past, NJ had deliberately treated low-speed, pedal-assist e-bikes as bicycles, not motor vehicles. Then we dramatically reversed course, burying ordinary riders in licensing, registration, testing, and MVC paperwork.
Who got nailed the hardest? Seniors who use e-bikes to stay mobile, people with disabilities who depend on them for independence & workers who need affordable transportation. Then came the business hit- small bike shops watched sales collapse.
And here we are.
Sen. Raj Mukherji has introduced S4830 to undo some of the SAME RESTRICTIONS we warned against. If Democrat legislators had listened the first time, there would have been amendments to the bill and we wouldn't need this expensive dance to undo what shouldn't have been done in the first place. Now we're spending more time and taxpayer dollars trying to fix an entirely unforced error.
Public safety was ALWAYS the goal. Regulating ordinary bicycles like motor vehicles was never the answer.
"A bill in the state Legislature would lift some of the most controversial and restrictive requirements of NJ's new e-bike law by deregulating the slowest low-speed models.":

A HALF-BILLION dollars. For ONE school. Fewer than 700 kids.
That's about $25,000 per student, per year… just for the building. Plenty of NJ districts spend less than that to educate a child for an entire year!
And State taxpayers would foot 85% of the bill. Yes, YOU!
This Newark scheme reeks of corruption and/or incompetence. I've asked the Education Commissioner and Attorney General to REJECT it. They have the power to do so.
While other schools are getting their budgets slashed, Newark has indulged in Staff fun days, Hawaii trips, and $2.8M in catering.
Now THIS?! Enough!!

💰 Inflation is already costing New Jersey families enough. A cost-of-living raise shouldn't mean a higher tax burden.
That's why I introduced S-2370 to adjust income tax brackets for inflation and help New Jerseyans keep more of their hard-earned money!

Two hours straight yesterday of Democrats and Republicans alike on New Jersey’s Senate Judiciary Committee saying their phones are ringing off the hook, lawyers and accountants can’t make any sense of the Labor Department’s new independent-contractor rule, concerns with every conceivable kind of work from babysitters and golf caddies to financial advisers and Netflix, all kinds of ideas thrown out from drafting a “Big Beautiful Bill” of industry carveouts to revisiting the state’s use of the ABC Test itself because nobody is actually sure whether about 1.7 million people in the state are, or are not, now in danger of losing our incomes and careers…

If you run a company, you now have a fiduciary/legal responsibility to make sure your healthcare benefits actually benefit your employees.
If not , you are legally liable.
You have to learn how it all works. You can’t ask a broker or consultant to figure it out for you. The responsibility stays with you and never goes to them. Even if they lie, steal and cheat you.
It’s all on you.
I hope you’re sitting down for this.

Tens of millions in questionable and wasteful spending - and yet, Trenton Democrats demand billions more from New Jersey taxpayers.
The State Auditor’s latest Newark audit exposes millions spent on a so-called “museum” that remains fenced off and unfinished, unnecessary trips, a gym inside an administrative building, and excessive health care costs. This follows earlier findings of waste on exotic trips, balloons, parties, and more.
Thanks to our Senate Republican Budget Officer Declan O’Scanlon for demanding accountability. Taxpayers cannot keep bankrolling a broken system while millions are squandered and the same failures keep repeating.
Enough is enough. Recover taxpayers’ money. Fix the school funding formula.
