Back to the Future” The Return of the Deposit.
Deposit Return is coming back!
♻️ The future isn't what it used to be. - it’s a whole lot more refundable!
The UK is bringing back the classic deposit return concept with a major upgrade.
Back in the 1940s, wartime notices reminded us that we only "borrowed" mineral water bottles”.
Now, Exchange for Change is making great progress toward launching the official Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) on 1 October 2027.
Here is what's happening:
• The Goal:
A refundable 20p deposit on PET plastic and metal drink containers to achieve a 90% collection rate.
• The Progress:
The deposit management organisation Exchange for Change is hitting key regulatory milestones, opening initial business registration, and building out the reverse vending machine infrastructure, with the certified supplier list starting to populate.
By blending the community spirit of the past with automated technology, the UK is transforming circularity in waste management.

“WHO OWNS THIS BOTTLE”?
“You BUY the drink and only BORROW the bottle”
(Advertisement: London wartime)
The campaign was run by The Soft Drinks Industry (War Time) Association Limited, based at 42 Upper Grosvenor Street, London.
This organisation was established during World War II to manage the production and distribution of soft drinks in the UK under wartime restrictions.
Key facts regarding its status and history:
Company Status: The association went into voluntary liquidation in 1948 following the end of wartime rationing and industry concentration.
Purpose: It was formed by the Ministry of Food to standardise the industry. Under its "concentration scheme," brand names were temporarily abolished, and drinks were sold under government-issue labels at fixed prices.
Legal Structure: It was incorporated under the Companies Act 1929 as a company limited by guarantee.
Successor: The British Soft Drinks Association was later incorporated on 3 November 1951 and remains the active trade body for the industry today.
The BSDA as we know it today was formed in 1987, as a result of the amalgamation of the National Association of Soft Drinks Manufacturers (NASDM), the British Soft Drinks Council (BSDC), the Scottish Soft Drinks Association (SSDA) and the Soft Drinks and Fruit Juice Association (SDFJA).
Previous Name : NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOFT DRINKS MANUFACTURERS LIMITED (THE) 03 Nov 1951 - 06 May 1987

Exchange For Change has officially published the new Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) Artwork Guidelines to standardise the Deposit Return Scheme customer experience.
Whether you are a retailer, brand, or RVM supplier, these newly released visual identity standards ensure that machines across the board remain highly recognisable, simple to navigate, and uniform in their messaging.
Here is a quick snapshot of what the new guidelines cover:
* Co-Branding Hierarchy: Up to 75% of the machine front and side panels are dedicated to Exchange For Change branding (top-down), leaving 24-25% at the bottom for custom retailer branding.
* Unified Visual Assets: Precise standards for using the primary "EFC Fluoro" yellow palette, master typography settings (DT SAS EFC), and fixed layout configurations.
* Step-by-Step Customer Journey: Unified pre-designed drag-and-drop components for the core user stages—1. Recycle, 2. Refund, 3. Redeem, followed cleanly by Accepted vs. Not Accepted details.
* Layout Safeguards: Mandatory implementation of a 15mm inset black border around the machine wrap to ensure the vibrant EFC Fluoro styling never directly clashes with a partner retailer's unique brand colours.
As certified machine models and specific asset packs roll out on the Exchange For Change website, matching master artwork will be made fully available.
If you are looking to prepare layouts for an uncertified or upcoming unit, the team advises contacting their Helpdesk directly at [email protected].

12 years ago I installed the very first Reverse Vending Machine in Wales in support of a Mandatory Deposit Return Scheme.
In October 2012, WRAP Cymru the Welsh branch of the Waste and Resources Action Programme officially launched a £432,000 "Recycle on the Go" grant programme funded by the Welsh Government
Wales @WRAP_Cymru funding enabled the Cardiff College to install the very first Reverse Vending Machine installed in Wales. as part of the “Recycle on the Go” Welsh Funding.
Cardiff College (now named Cardiff and Vale College ) identified that the Aramark run restaurant areas were ideal positions to install Reverse Vending Recycling Machines, rewarding students and staff for recycling to encourage recycling and reduce litter.
The project received a 100% positive feedback and helped with discussions about a Deposit Return Scheme.
I used DRS ready machines that were used at that time in the Deposit Return Scheme in Germany.
Reverse Vending technology has advanced greatly since , with exciting new advancements in recognition systems and online availability.
By 2014 I had installed a further 200 Reverse Vending Machines throughout the UK in rail stations, transport hubs, offices , hospitals, supermarkets and the education sector.
The journey towards a UK Wide Deposit Return Scheme has been a long one, but now getting closer. with a confirmed start date of October 2027 for England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Under the upcoming Deposit Return Scheme, Wales will officially include glass bottles, but with a temporary zero-pence deposit during a four-year transition period starting on 1 October 2027.
While England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have completely excluded glass from their schemes, the Welsh Government secured a unique exemption to keep glass in scope.
However, to prevent cross-border fraud and give businesses time to adapt, glass bottles will carry no deposit and will be exempt from special DRS labelling requirements until 30 September 2031, allowing consumers to return them at designated points purely for recycling.
The Welsh Government has officially appointed Exchange for Change as the Deposit Management Organisation (DMO) to administer the scheme in Wales

Exchange for Change delays certified @Reverse_Vending machine list for second time
The list was originally expected by the end of September, before EfC revised its timetable to early October
Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) operator Exchange for Change (EfC) has delayed publishing its list of certified reverse vending machines (RVMs) for a second time, with retailers urged not to purchase equipment until it is released.
The list was originally expected by the end of September, before EfC revised its timetable to early October. However, it has still yet to be published.
Better Retailing understands publication is now anticipated by the end of October, although EfC has stressed this is not a firm deadline.
Around 25 RVM suppliers are understood to be interested in the UK market. Certification involves multiple stages of testing, and the list will continue to be updated after publication as more machines are approved.
Why do retailers need Exchange for Change’s list of certified RVMs?
Retailers who purchase an RVM that is not certified by EfC risk losing access to its £6,000 granttowards installation costs.
They will also receive 40% less in handling feesfor every container accepted through an unapproved machine.
DRS launches on 1 October 2027 across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, introducing a refundable 20p deposit on eligible drinks containers.
It will cover PET plastic, steel and aluminium containers between 150ml and 3l, with glass also included in Wales.
Retailers required to operate return points will accept containers and refund deposits, either manually or through RVMs.

I want less litter in Ealing Southall so last time I went to Ireland I checked out machines they use to recycle cans and plastic bottles. You get your money back for not littering. It's great news that Labour is bringing these machines to shops in Ealing Southall next year!
