there's some speculation within german media that the far right is behind the attack, weaponising it to fuel its anti-leftist narrative. seems unlikely and too conspiratorial - the far right doesn't need to risk this level of fuckery to win elections.

the group has been around since at least the early 2010s, when the group (or groups that used similar volcano symbolism), sabotaged railway infrastructures. 4/

in 2025, after sabotage of a radio mast in grunewald-schmargendorf, the group's pamphlet argued for the need to sabotage the areas/homes of the wealthiest, listing specific oligarchs and politicians. they wrote: "peace to the huts – war to the palaces." 3/ de.indymedia.org/node/505874

it's not the group's first attack. in 2024, the volcano group attacked the electricity pylons of the tesla gigafactory just outside of berlin, bringing the factory to a halt for multiple days. in the communique, they mocked elon musk and the false promises of green capitalism. 2/
