๐ How do countries collaborate to shape the future in a new geopolitical era?
During his participation in the Berlin Global Dialogue 2026, Josรฉ Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs (@JoseMSalazarX), #ECLAC Executive Secretary, highlighted the importance of strengthening the agency of Latin America and the Caribbean in the face of ongoing geopolitical transformations.

๐๏ธAre we building the cities we want?
๐ฑ๐ On World Cities Day, we reflect on the challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean in building more sustainable, inclusive and productive cities.
๐ฒ๐ณ๐๏ธ Building sustainable cities means much more than creating green spaces. It requires making housing more affordable, improving basic services, mobility and public spaces, expanding economic opportunities and making better use of existing urban assets and infrastructure.
๐ To mark this day, we invite you to explore three #ECLAC publications that examine progress towards #SDG11, the challenges of the #2030Agenda and opportunities offered by the circular urban economy.

๐Investment in leave policies, universal childcare services and long-term care in Latin America and the Caribbean could generate approximately 31.3 million jobs in the region, according to a joint report by #ECLAC and @ilo. The formal sector would account for 88% of these jobs.
๐ The document presents investment scenarios for 23 countries in the region, developed using the ILOโs Care Policy Investment Simulator, which has been updated in collaboration with @eclac_un. This tool enables the estimation of investment needs and their potential effects on employment, income and tax revenue.

What role can Latin America play in an increasingly complex global landscape? On October 27, AS/COA welcomed former Chilean President @mbachelet and Executive Secretary of @cepal_onu @JoseMSalazarX to exchange insights on the topic.
The conversation highlighted key findings from the UN Commission on Latin Americaโs Geopolitical Future, exploring how the region can navigate shifting global dynamics, including U.S.-China relations, artificial intelligence, and emerging security challenges.
The discussion was moderated by AS/COA Vice President of Policy and Americas Quarterly Editor-in-Chief @BrazilBrian, who also served as a member of the UN commission.
๐๐ How can we measure development beyond GDP?
Professor Nora Lustig (@noralustig), co-chair of the @UN High-Level Expert group on Beyond GDP, met with officials from #ECLAC's Subregional Headquarters in #Mexico to discuss the challenges of developing new metrics for development.
The expert group was convened in May 2025 by the Secretary-General @antonioguterres to complement traditional economic metrics with indicators that better reflect peopleโs well-being and the sustainability of the planet.

๐UPDATED ECONOMIC PROJECTIONSย
#ECLAC updated its economic growth projections for the regionโs economies. These predictions show significant differences between subregions:ย
๐นSouth America is expected to grow by 2.1% in 2026 and 2.4% in 2027.
๐น In Central America, 1.7% growth is expected in 2026 and 2.8% in 2027. This result is influenced by the performance of Cuba and Haiti. If these two economies are excluded, the subregional average would be 4.1% for 2026 and 4.2% for 2027.ย
๐นIn the Caribbean, growth is expected to reach 7.4% in in 2026 and 7.0% in 2027, with a marked impact by the performance of Guyana. When this country is excluded, rates predicted for the Caribbean are 1.2% and 1.9%, respectively.
๐Greater growth is expected in 2027 in an environment marked by persistent risks in the international context and the possible impacts of the El Niรฑo phenomenon. This prediction will be affected by the evolution of worldwide demand, commodity prices, and international financing conditions, as well as the capacity of the regionโs economies to sustain consumption and investment.ย

How much your country will grow in 2026 and 2027? ๐ค ๐๐๐
#ECLAC updated its economic growth projections for #LatinAmerica and the #Caribbean.ย ย
๐ธGeopolitical tensions, disruptions in logistics routes, and decreased predictability of trade policy are reconfiguring the landscape in which the regionโs economies operate.
๐ธIn this context, external shocks affect conditions of external demand and increase production and import costs, particularly due to the increase in energy and food prices.
๐ธIn the labour market, employment continues to grow, though at a lower rate. This loss of growth limits the expansion of household income and consumption and hinders progress in the reduction of labour gaps and informality.ย

In a press release, the @UN regional organization states that the region is expected to grow by 2.5% in 2027. Lower growth in employment, a slight increase in inflation, the perspective of more costly financing, as well as possible effects of #ElNiรฑo could affect that recovery.ย
