"The Nigerian state, having learned from the Abacha years that direct repression generated too much international attention, developed more sophisticated methods for neutralizing dissent. Instead of killing intellectuals, it began buying them."

FUNSO DOHERTY EXPOSES THE PYRAMID OF AGBEROISM AND MULTI-LAYERED TAXATION ON LAGOS ROADS; THE PYRAMID.
The Lagos State Governorship Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), HE Funso Doherty, has drawn attention to what he describes as an entrenched system of agberoism and multiple layers of taxation operating across Lagos roads, raising serious questions about who benefits from the system and the burden it places on residents, motorists, traders, and transport operators. Here's is the pyramid.
According to Funso Doherty, the problem goes beyond the activities of individual street-level collectors. He argues that agberoism has evolved into a deeply entrenched structure, allegedly sustained by political interests and used as a channel for extracting revenue from ordinary Lagosians.
His position raises a fundamental question: why has a problem that continues to affect the daily lives and economic activities of Lagos residents remained unresolved?
Doherty argues that meaningful reform requires confronting the structures that sustain this system, rather than merely addressing its visible operators. Lagos deserves a transparent, accountable, and properly regulated transport and revenue collection system; one that protects livelihoods, eliminates arbitrary levies, and allows businesses and commuters to thrive without unnecessary financial burdens.
The people of Lagos deserve answers, accountability, and a government that puts their welfare above political interests.
The conversation about a cleaner, safer, and more accountable Lagos must begin with confronting the structures that undermine its progress.

In 2008, as medical students at OAU, Ile-Ife, Emmanuel Iduma and I kept talking about new Nigerian and African writing. By February 2009 that became the first issue of Saraba, with early work from Ayobami Adebayo, Elnathan John, Chika Unigwe and more. In 2019 I co-founded The Lagos Review, an online culture magazine, where I was music editor until 2023. In 2021 came Yaba Left Review (@YLReview), a paying literary journal for poetry and essays. I serve as its publisher, and it's now home to our Agbaman interview series. Building platforms for African writers has been as much a part of my life as writing itself.

I’ll say this once.
I deliberately refused to engage the comments about where my ancestral home is because it is irrelevant to the point I’ve been making since yesterday.
The idea that a person who lives in Lagos and contributes to the economy of Lagos has no right to an opinion about how Lagos State is governed because they aren’t an indigene absolutely makes no sense. It is rooted in Bigotry and stupidity so I refuse to give it any legitimacy.
Public infrastructure, sanitation, roads, drainage, transportation and the general quality of life affects everyone who lives here.
You cannot expect people to contribute to a state’s economy and bear the consequences of its governance then tell them they have no business questioning how that state is run.
I don’t need to prove where my ancestors come from to have a legitimate interest in the quality of governance in Lagos. Neither should anyone else. Kalas

The same political establishment has governed Lagos for almost 30 years, yet look at the condition of Nigeria’s highest internally generated revenue state.
Yesterday, on my way to Lekki, it started raining. Within minutes, everywhere started flooding. Watching it happen in real time was jarring.

How are people who don’t have cars going to move around in Lagos this December? People is me.
We don’t have any reliable ride hailing service. Do you know how wild it is for a city like Lagos not to have taxis? Sensational
The reality of Nigeria, A medlab scientist in FMC ASABA is only entitled to use a pair of gloves per day, despite seeing an average of 10 patients a day, how..? He sanitizes his gloves with spirit after each patient, yet the government is buying prado to campaign for elections.

Since the outbreak, the NCDC’s toll free number ‘6232’ has either been busy or leading people to voicemail. A country that is intent on combatting Ebola rapidly, does not shut the public out. You’ve got a WhatsApp number that’s not on WhatsApp, & a toll free that doesn’t connect.
EBOLA: STAY INFORMED. STAY SAFE.
Following the confirmation of an Ebola disease case in the FCT, the Federal Government, through the NCDC and relevant health authorities, is strengthening surveillance and response efforts.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person who is sick or has died, or through contaminated materials.
Please remain calm and rely on verified information.

City Boy Movement coordinators arrived to Kaduna in private jets, to go and tell the poor masses that they're hungry because of opposition.
Dayo is a manifeststion of everyone working for the APC. His colleagues are only angry with him because he's an obvious buffoon. If he's getting ₦1b+ for SUVs from 'Mummy' to press his ego, in their internal power tussle, then you don't want to know what's going on in City Boys.
