"A Broadside for the Nation", assembled by ACTA’s National Commission on American History and Civic Education, makes the case for higher ed to restore a required course in US history and government in order to graduate - as well as how to make this vision a reality.

An administrator responsible for a core curriculum at one of America's best public universities who has deep respect for and experience in liberal education. Bizarre.
NEW: @UTAustin @JimDavis_UT announces a new “University College” to be “the guardian of the new core curriculum,” led by inaugural dean Devin Stauffer, faculty fellow at the Civitas Institute and a government professor. Stauffer chaired the core curriculum task force.

And congratulations to Devin Stauffer, director of one of ACTA's Oases of Excellence, for being named the inaugural Dean of the University College charged with teaching this core curriculum.
Having recently redesigned its core curriculum, UT Austin will now have a “university college” to take responsibility for it. It “will have the governance, the authority, and the funding to deliver and sustain an outstanding Core,” according to President Davis. Fantastic news!

Some schools will reform, and save their Humanities programs. Others will coast on inertia and prestige. But most will, unfortunately, fail to act in time.
I am going to say something that very few people want to hear, but I think it's true. The only way to "save the Humanities" is through serious gen ed reform that most universities don't want to undertake. The hour is very late.

How bad is administrative bloat in higher ed? At MIT, the “student body has grown by 8% and its faculty by 9% since the mid-1980s. By comparison, the tally of administrators jumped by 189%.”

New piece in @LawLiberty by ACTA President Michael Poliakoff on how (and how not) to run a civics center. More and more centers are opening, with increasing enrollment. It's time to look at where they succeed and how they can do better.

🧵The number of humanities dissertations produced annually has declined by almost half, according to a new analysis. The same report shows that language related to power and identity surged while treatments of “Western,” “European,” and “American” turned increasingly negative.

Universities were quick to dismiss the Trump Administration's call to action as a political hit - but many of the things called for are broadly supported by Americans. Universities can't both fail to reform internally and decry any attempt towards external reform.
