Managing Projects to Achieve Victory 🌟 What changes when a project manager is expected to think not only like a delivery manager, but like a business leader? In a dialogue published by IPMA Project Perspectives, Huawei Fellow and Chief Project Management Expert Sun Hu describes how Huawei has been promoting the transformation of project managers into “Project CEOs.” The idea goes beyond a new title. It reflects a shift from managing execution to taking a broader view of the project lifecycle: understanding customer needs, integrating resources, identifying new opportunities and focusing on the value created through delivery. In this model, completing the contract is not the end of project management. The project manager is expected to connect execution with customer success and business outcomes, moving from simply coordinating work to taking greater ownership of the value the project is meant to create. Old Wine, New Bottles? From Project Sustainability to ESG 🌟 Sustainability is not new to project management. So what, if anything, does ESG actually change? A recent article in IPMA Project Perspectives explores whether ESG is simply “old wine in new bottles” - or whether it represents a more fundamental shift in how sustainability is managed through projects. The distinction matters. Sustainability can remain broad and difficult to translate into day-to-day project decisions. ESG introduces a stronger emphasis on measurable, reportable and enforceable practices, connecting environmental and social ambitions more directly with governance and accountability. But measurement alone is not enough. The real value of ESG depends on whether it becomes embedded in early planning, stakeholder engagement, risk management and decision-making, rather than becoming another reporting exercise at the end of the process.
