Significant even brave intervention by Oman foreign minister @badralbusaidi at Cambridge calling for the Gulf States to form a non-aggression pact with Iran and Iraq. Says US should no longer be primary provider of security in region, adding external partners have imposed the most damaging of the priorities - "the requirement that Iran be excluded. Not just excluded. Worse. Positioned as the threat against which regional security had to be organised." He argues "What holds us back is that issues which ought to be handled at a regional level by the states of the Gulf themselves, are made more complex, more intractable and sometimes simply impossible to resolve because the region's security arrangements are insufficiently developed. "And they are insufficiently developed because they have relied for too long on the involvement of external powers. "The complications which stand in the way of successful resolutions to both the Iranian nuclear issue and the question of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz are simply the latest effects of an unstable combination of power projection and dependency in the Gulf. "In other words, the nuclear issue and the Hormuz issue are both impossible to resolve because external powers continue to define the terms of engagement, while regional powers are unable to take collective responsibility for making their own security arrangements and reach a consensus on them". Says Iran "has for nearly half a century been systematically excluded from playing any meaningful role in the security arrangements of the region. "An exclusion with profoundly negative consequences, not just for Iran, but for the region as a whole". He says "Instead of a genuine security structure designed to maintain stable relations between the eight states of the Gulf, an unstable regional system has been constructed on the entirely false perception that there is a fundamental regional antagonism between Iran and the Arab states of the Gulf. "There is no such fundamental antagonism. There are problems, yes, of course. But the plain fact is that Arabs and Persians have lived in peace around the Gulf for centuries. It’s not a matter of whether you’re friendly or hostile to Iran. "Today, Persia is a fact, 93 million people and three thousand years of history. Roughly half of the Gulf littoral. "Any Gulf security architecture that doesn’t include them is inherently unstable. It’s structurally unsound. And recent events expose the terrible cost of allowing the false perception of antagonism and exclusion." "It is us, in the Gulf, who ultimately bear the responsibility for devising, developing and implementing a new regional security structure. The time has come when it no longer makes sense just to blame everyone else. We need to begin a new regional dialogue on Gulf security, and we need to do so before other solutions are imposed on the region which would effectively consolidate the pattern of dependency and exclusion for which we urgently need to find an alternative. What is needed, instead, is a new and inclusive framework, involving all eight Gulf littoral states".

Fertilizer through Hormuz has dropped to zero. No fertilizer cargoes crossing the strait in September or October. Before the war, about 20% of the world’s traded nitrogen fertilizer went through it, Fertilizer Daily reports. The Gulf also supplies about half of the world’s traded sulfur. Hear me out: urea isn’t the problem. China raised its nitrogen exports about 47% and the US about 60%. By the end of August urea was back to its January price, IFPRI data shows. Sulfur is the problem. It has more than doubled, to above $1,000 a tonne, and phosphate is up 25–30%. You need sulfur to make phosphate fertilizer. Mosaic has idled two Louisiana plants, and India’s fertilizer subsidy bill could pass 3 trillion rupees, against 1.71 trillion budgeted. Oil found other ways out of the Gulf. Sulfur hasn’t. source: World Visualized

Protecting submarine communication cables that pass through strategic straits is a fundamental pillar of maritime security. These cables constitute critical infrastructure that supports the internet, telecommunications, and data flows, while contributing to the growth of the digital economy and sustainable development. In the Strait of #Hormuz, these cables connect Gulf countries to international networks, underscoring the importance of ensuring their protection and the reliability of their services as a shared interest. The accompanying infographic illustrates the submarine communication cables that pass through the strait.

Two Chinese-owned LNG carriers spent 9 and 11 days looping over the trans-Pacific cables, far off their routes to Canada’s Kitimat LNG terminal. One turned an 11-day crossing into 29, reversing course four times. This could indicate a possible cable-mapping operation.

A little context to this @ftenergy claim that ship masters are being paid $100,000 month. 1️⃣The minimum wage for mariners is currently $690/month. Tanker masters are making about $12k/month. 2️⃣The $50k bonus is to sign up for a 3 to 4 month tour on a tanker that is doing shuttle service between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman 3️⃣The "danger pay" is only paid while the ships are making the Hormuz transit or if the ship comes under attack. It is unlikely that ship owners are paying 4x to 6x to sit in the Persian Gulf or Gulf of Oman, and most assuredly when the ship has departed. 4️⃣The "mercenary" term is derogatory. Instead, the mariners should be considered veterans for willing to take these chances with minimum defenses. 5️⃣ @business ran a story about a Filipino master making about $100k for a three month tour on a tanker, but not each month. This is not saying it is impossible, but it is on the very high end and probably unlikely. It should be noted that shipping companies will Nickle and Dime mariners for every expense and do not think for a minute that they are ravishing their mariners with new found wealth because of their profits. The biggest expense on ships are fuel and crew and they will do everything possible to minimize each to maximize profit.

. Saudi Arabia’s nuclear turn isn’t really about cheap electricity Riyadh sits on oil, gas, and some of the world’s cheapest solar. So why sign a U.S. civil nuclear deal?Because nuclear is 24/7 power, something solar can’t do alone. It can replace the million barrels of oil Saudi Arabia still burns for electricity, free that crude for export, and feed desalination with waste heat. It’s also strategy. Domestic uranium. Fuel-cycle know-how. Technology transfer. A way to lock today’s oil wealth into plants that last for generations. And, quietly, an option if Iran or the region’s balance of power shifts. Washington wants the contracts and the influence. Trump then tied implementation to Israel normalization, which makes the whole pact shaky. The UAE already proved Gulf nuclear can work. Saudi Arabia wants the same, and more than kilowatts. Source: @arabcenterdc by @jimkrane

Important to note regarding Saudi-Turkey-Pakistan Mecca Accords: Houthis are attacking Saudi and Israel is attacking Turkey in Syria, and no sign of Mecca Accords allies jumping into action or the alliance itself being relevant. That can change over time, but for now it is not playing a role.
