Ever since I watched the Backrooms movie, I thinking about a theory/fanfic blending this concept of liminal spaces with the Digimon universe. ​In my head, the Digital World itself works like a massive manifestation of everything on the net, from the surface web all the way to the deep and dark web. It wasn't programmed by anyone, it simply emerged from the sheer volume of data, searches, photos, and information humanity dumps online every single day. That’s exactly why there are rational, civilized Digimon (born from structured data and knowledge) alongside completely feral or corrupted ones (born from viruses, malware, and internet chaos). It also perfectly explains all those bizarre, out-of-place things in the anime, like phone booths on the beach, power lines in the middle of a forest, and random vending machines, they’re basically rendering artifacts from a system that learned what those objects look like from our photos, without actually understanding how they function in the real world. >>​That’s where the Backrooms come in. While in the movie the liminal space shapes itself around a single person's mind, in this universe the Backrooms would act as a sort of "staging area" or quarantine zone between the Real World and the Digital World. A sterile, endless non-place created by the system itself to keep both worlds from colliding all at once and crashing reality. ​There wouldn't be that horror vibe with monsters chasing you. The only real danger would be getting lost inside forever, like a data packet suffering from a routing error. The only "inhabitants" would be humans who accidentally slipped through a glitch in reality, or lost, confused Digimon trying to find their way back home (Nothing prevents there from being some evil Digimon lost there as well). ​And that’s where the DigiDestined come in. Since the Backrooms have no fixed map and are just an infinite maze of empty hallways, the Digivice would act as a security key and a network GPS. Only someone with a Digivice can read the hidden metadata of that place, trace the safe route through the maze, and unlock the right gateway to cross from one world to the other.
