October 27, 1950 76 years ago today the West View Indians hosted the Baldwin Highlanders at the West View High School Field. Mario Martorelli was in his 6th season as head coach and it would be another 24 years before the field was renamed in his honor. West View recorded a 7-1-1 record in 1950. This was in the middle of a very successful stretch for Martorelli as his cumulative record between 1948 to 1953 was 40-8-4. The Highlanders were a frequent opponent of the Indians during this era as they met 11 times between 1940 and 1959. They wouldn’t play again until they shared a Quad A conference for 8 seasons beginning in 1982. Baldwin is still the 10th most played opponent of the Indians even though they last met in 2017. The Indians all-time record in this series is 18-5-1. As for the game that produced the program below, West View won 40-7, but all other details are lost as there was an ongoing paper handlers strike and none of the Pittsburgh newspapers were publishing in October 1950. From the inside, some bios and a starting lineup. And hey, how about that 8pm kickoff?
