A few people have asked why we oppose an insurance based system for the UK: 1. It would be more expensive 2. It would be inherently unfair 3. It does not guarantee better outcomes

Pharmacy First is expanding in England. From this autumn, participating pharmacies will be able to assess and treat five more conditions: • Migraines • Acne • Scabies • Ear infections in adults • Rhinitis This means they will be able to prescribe treatment directly, without people needing to see a GP first. Pharmacy First has provided 14 million consultations since launching in 2024. The NHS expects the expansion to provide another 2–3 million consultations each year. Do you think this is a good idea or a bad idea? Let us know in the comments.

The NHS needs more than additional doctors, nurses, AHPs, and other staff. Those staff need the equipment, buildings and technology to do their jobs. If we’re serious about cutting waiting lists and diagnosing people earlier, we need sustained investment in NHS diagnostic capacity too.

Source: OECD Health at a Glance 2025, using the latest available data on CT, MRI and PET scanners per million people. There are some differences in how countries report their equipment, including a limitation in the UK data, so comparisons should be interpreted with that in mind. oecd.org/en/publications/hea…

The number of scanners a health service has matters. You can’t diagnose and treat people quickly if you don’t have enough CT, MRI and PET scanners. So how many do different countries have per million people? 🇯🇵 Japan: 184 🇦🇺 Australia: 94 🇬🇷 Greece: 92 🇰🇷 South Korea: 87 🇺🇸 USA: 86 🇮🇹 Italy: 79 🇩🇪 Germany: 74 🇫🇮 Finland: 55 OECD average: 51 What about in the UK?

🇬🇧 UK: 19 Just 19 CT, MRI and PET scanners per million people. That’s less than 40% of the average. And that matters, because scanners are fundamental to diagnosing many serious conditions. If we don’t have enough of them, patients wait longer for the tests they need.

The leaders at @UHNM_NHS have decided to this staff room away from their doctors. Is it any wonder we don’t have enough medical staff in this country?

This is the scale of the challenge this government is facing. We must never forget what the Conservatives did to the NHS.

Huge thanks to all the NHS staff who are doing their best to keep the health service going despite having 10% fewer staff than we’re meant to have. We see what you do, and couldn’t be more grateful 💙
