🧠🤖 Generative AI is changing medicine. But when AI helps inform decisions about brain surgery, we need to get it right.
So, we submitted recommendations to @US_FDA on its proposed regulatory approach to generative AI-enabled medical devices.
Our message? Encourage innovation. Protect patients. Keep clinical expertise at the center:
🔹 Evaluate AI based on its real-world impact on clinical decisions, not just what a device claims to do.
🔹 Build safeguards against AI hallucinations and misleading recommendations.
🔹 Ensure transparency so physicians can understand and evaluate AI-generated outputs.
🔹 Allow lower-risk AI improvements without unnecessary regulatory delays, while maintaining oversight of higher-risk changes.
The future of medicine is exciting! Let's make sure it's also safe, effective, and worthy of patients' trust.

Maciej S. Lesniak, MD, MHCM, FAANS, chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery, has been inducted into the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Lesniak was recognized for pioneering a method of loading neural stem cells with an engineered tumor-specific virus to infect and kill #glioblastoma cells. His work has launched novel and first-in-human #ClinicalTrials and advanced the understanding of antiviral and antitumoral immunity in glioblastoma.
We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Lesniak and his contributions to #neurosurgery, #NeuroOncology, #BrainTumorResearch and patient care.

Yeah... @RepGregMurphy came with receipts @UHC. And as the younger people say, he left absolutely no crumbs. 🔥
A physician. A patient. A Member of Congress. Three perspectives, one unmistakable message: Patients deserve better.
This isn't a soundbite. Dr. Murphy walks the walk. He champions bipartisan legislation that puts patients first and pushes his colleagues to act.
Keep cooking, Dr. Murphy. 🔥🧠 #Fixpriorauth

Health insurance companies should work for patients, not stand in the way of their care. As a physician, I’ve seen how insurance denials can delay treatment and put patients in difficult positions. Our health insurance system needs serious reform that puts patients first and ensures Americans can access the care their doctors recommend.

Physicians take an oath to put patients first. Shouldn't the policies governing their care do the same? 🤔
Doesn't look like it....
Newly released records raise troubling concerns about @CMSgov's WISeR Model 👉thousands of prior authorization denials, treatment delays, and reports of patient harm.
At the AANS/CNS Washington Committee, we've always aimed to #FixPriorAuth. We've met with @CMSinnovates and, on paper, WISeR looked like it could reduce friction in the prior auth process.
But that promise means little if seniors face unnecessary delays and physicians face yet another layer of administrative burden.

Watch this powerful plea from AANS/CNS Washington Committee member JP Kolcun, MD, on the erosion of physician autonomy, mounting workloads, and why some of our brightest minds may choose careers outside medicine.
And it begs the question: How much have federal policies contributed to these challenges?
Answer: More than Washington may care to admit. 🙈
It's time for Washington to listen more closely to the physicians delivering care, rather than relying so heavily on think tanks and policy institutions pontificating from afar about how our health care system should work. 🧠

The proposed #Medicare fee schedule includes a terrible policy that would cut payments for same-day patient care across nearly every specialty practice. @CMSGov must withdraw this proposal. #Modifier25 Read more bit.ly/4AXN0Az

We've been getting questions on our social media channels, so to clarify: @elonmusk won't be participating in our October 20 webinar... 😅
But we're excited to welcome the brilliant David McMullen, MD, from @neuralink to discuss the future of medical device innovation and what it means for neurosurgery.
That said, hey @elonmusk, if you'd like to drop by, we're happy to send you a link. Just let us know. 😉🧠
Great to see the growing conversation around e-bike safety! 🧠🚲 And there's plenty more happening on the advocacy front worth highlighting.
At our July meeting, the AANS/CNS Washington Committee took this issue directly to Capitol Hill, with Drs. Clemens Schirmer, Krystal Tomei, and Anthony DiGiorgio leading our efforts.
Building on coalition outreach through the Injury and Violence Prevention Network (IVPN), we've continued engaging federal policymakers on opportunities to strengthen national injury surveillance to inform state and local policymaking.
We're also grateful to @councilsns for developing the foundational position statement, to @AANSNeuro and @CNS_Update for formally adopting it, and @JohnMaaMD for partnering with the Washington Committee to refine an e-bike safety resolution ahead of the AMA Interim House of Delegates meeting.
From clinical concerns to organized medicine to Capitol Hill, this is what turning advocacy into action looks like.

You can change the name, but the same shady insurance company tactics persist.
A New York neurosurgery practice has filed a complaint in federal court challenging Elevance Health's policy of penalizing hospitals for working with out-of-network physicians.... even those complying with the No Surprises Act.
For those unfamiliar, @ElevanceHealth was formerly Anthem, which faced years of lawsuits, regulatory scrutiny, and controversy before rebranding in 2022.
It ranks #18 on the Fortune 500 list.
If insurers offer rates that don't cover the cost of delivering care, and hospitals are penalized for working with out-of-network physicians, how does that protect patient access or choice? Who has the leverage here? Who is getting squeezed? Who is contributing to consolidation? 👏Follow 👏the 👏money.

CMS met with the certified IDR entities.
Want to know who they are and how the process works? IndeMed's IDR 101 breaks down all 17 certified entities, who owns them and why physicians prevail: insurer QPAs ran below market in 60.6% of disputes. indemed.org/IDR-101/
CMS brought together leaders from across federal agencies and all certified Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR) entities to address rising costs tied to out-of-network payment disputes and identify ways to strengthen the federal IDR process.
We’re working together to improve the fairness and efficiency of the program while continuing to protect patients from surprise medical bills.
