CPJ commends #PressFreedom advocate @RepGregoryMeeks for calling on Egypt to reverse the closure of Mada Masr and release wrongfully detained journalists, including editor-in-chief Lina Attalah.
RM @RepGregoryMeeks: The Egyptian government’s closure of @MadaMasr and its politically motivated detention and conviction of editor Lina Attalah is unacceptable. These actions are attacks on press freedom and a blatant effort to silence independent journalism. I call on Egypt to reverse the closure and release wrongfully detained journalists.

The European Union stands up for press freedom around the world and in its member states - and rightly so. But it is time the @EU_Commission practised what it preaches. It must stop stonewalling journalists! @pressfreedom
Thank you #PressFreedom advocate @DavidCasaMEP for joining CPJ in urging @EU_Commission to stop blocking journalists’ access to its documents.
A free press is vital for keeping citizens informed and holding institutions accountable.
I join journalist associations in urging @EU_Commission to do better.

"A newly surfaced message from inside Iran's Evin Prison confirms that Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh has been denied critical medical care and surgery for six months. CPJ has repeatedly called for Valizadeh’s immediate and unconditional release, and raised concerns about the denial of medical treatment. Iranian authorities must grant him urgent medical attention, and release him unconditionally now."

#Serbia 🇷🇸: This weekend's historic election, which saw former president Aleksandar Vučić lose to a student-led protest movement, was marred by widespread attacks on the press.
On election day, journalists were assaulted, pelted with stones and kicked while reporting; foreign crews were turned back at the border; reporters were barred from polling stations and electoral commissions over accreditation that the law does not require, and some were forcibly removed by security; the ruling SNS party excluded independent outlets from its headquarters on election night; and journalists faced smears on pro-government TV as well as online death threats.
As a new government takes shape, CPJ reiterates its pre-election call for every case to be fully investigated.
At this critical period of change, journalists must be able to work freely and inform the Serbian people of what is happening in their democracy.

CPJ is honoring Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi at our 2026 International Press Freedom Awards 🏆
Panyi's stories exposing the workings of former prime minister Viktor Orbán’s regime have not only had a huge impact at home in Hungary, but have also influenced wider European policy debate. cpj.org/awards/szabolcs-pany…

Szabolcs Panyi’s expert reporting also made him a target of Orbán, particularly in the run-up to Hungary’s April election. Now, journalists in Hungary say the pressure is lifting after Orbán’s landslide loss in that vote.

“I’m an American. I work for the Washington Post. My story’s getting a lot of attention around the world. Everyone wants to talk to me. But I can't imagine what it’s like for all of the victims that have gone through this same ordeal and are living with the threat of this violence on a daily basis,” journalist Heidi Levine, who was violently assaulted by Israeli settlers last week, told @CNN's @jaketapper.

CPJ submitted testimony to the @TLHumanRights ahead of its October 21 briefing on transnational networks fueling the war in Sudan, highlighting how foreign weapons, financing, personnel, and logistical support sustain armed actors responsible for killing, detaining, and otherwise targeting journalists.
The testimony calls on Congress to increase scrutiny of the transnational networks sustaining the conflict, strengthen oversight of arms transfers, pursue accountability for attacks on journalists, and support Sudanese journalists and independent media.

Thank you #PressFreedom advocate Sen. @ChrisVanHollen for calling for an end to Egypt’s assault on press freedom. Journalism is #NotACrime.
“Journalists must be able to document what happens around the country without fear. Their ability to do so is an essential part of a free and fair election.” — Attila Mong, @CPJ_Eurasia program coordinator
#Serbia 🇷🇸: CPJ calls on Serbian authorities to ensure that journalists can report safely throughout Sunday’s parliamentary election, and the period that follows.
During the election campaign, journalists have been pushed and hit by police officers, had phones seized or cameras struck, and been prevented from covering campaign events.
“The attacks we have seen during this election campaign are a warning of what could happen on October 25 and afterwards. Serbian authorities must ensure that police protect journalists rather than obstruct them and that local and international reporters can access election-related events. All reported attacks and irregularities must be promptly investigated,” said Attila Mong, CPJ’s Europe program coordinator.
"Journalists must be able to document what happens around the country without fear. Their ability to do so is an essential part of a free and fair election," Mong said.
