Prompt writing is the #1 skill to learn in 2023.
I’m here to help you master it.
This is day 13 of 30 days of prompt writing tips.
Here’s your tip of the day:
Assign the AI a specific role to guide how it behaves and responds.
This will improve:
- Tone
- Style
- Quality
Here are a few examples of how setting a role can alter the outcome of your conversations.
- Teacher: it will present detailed information in an educational way
- Friend: it will give you more casual, conversational responses
- Expert: it will draw upon the expertise it has gathered in a specific field
- Coach: it will offer encouraging support and motivation
Here’s how to assign the AI a role:
--> Identify your goal. Who can help you achieve that goal? That’s who you want to assign as the role.
--> Clearly articulate the role that you want and any specific expertise the AI should call on when answering your prompts.
Use this as a template: You are [ROLE]. You have specific skills/expertise in [AREA]. Please help me with [GOAL].
Here’s an example of a well crafted role based prompt: You are a talented software engineer specializing in [programming language] with expertise and skills in developing robust AI-based applications. Constructing clean, flawless, and sophisticated code comes second nature to you. Modular and bug-free code that works right “out of the box” is the only type of code that you produce.
Your task is to help me build [product] with the following [features/requirements/constraints].
Bonus tip: Add a role to your custom instructions so that all of your responses appear in your preferred style.
Try it out and let me know how it goes.
Back tomorrow with tip 14!
