Introducing The FADER’s October 2026 cover star:
Syd.
After two decades anchoring Odd Future, fronting The Internet, and shaping hits for industry heavyweights from the soundboard, Syd stepped into her own this summer with the release of her remarkable third solo album, 'Beard.'
She and her closest collaborators tell the story of how she earned this moment at her 2026 cover story here: features.thefader.com/syd

I loved interviewing Helen Sun for her first interview for @thefader. Her indie pop-rock is casual, chic, and quietly cinematic.

Helen Sun's music is cutting and casual.
She recorded her breakout ep on a USB mic she found in a friend's trashcan. With no strategy, it spurred indie buzz that brought the London-based artist on a stateside tour.

girlsweetvoiced says she taught herself how to make music online.
“I went on YouTube and Google, and I was like, 'How to write songs.' I followed it play-by-play. I gave myself a bit of a curriculum.”

Syd says the one thing AI can't do is have soul.
"I try to put some of my soul into everything that I make. I feel like most genres are soul music. Everything except for maybe AI music."

Syd says The Internet is family.
"We pride ourselves on keeping ourselves together and staying together. We’re really proud of the fact that we’ve been able to keep our band together."

Syd says 'Beard' is her most personal album because it's made up of songs she actually wrote for herself. Her first solo album, 'Fin,' was filled with songs she’d written to give away.
"That’s why this album, 'Beard,' feels the most personal. I wrote all of these songs for me to sing."

Syd says she never planned on being an artist.
“I never dreamed of being the frontwoman of a band or a singer. It was suffering when I was DJing in front of a crowd when I had never DJ’d for people before. I taught myself how to DJ two months before I started touring with Odd Future. Doing that was the worst anxiety ever. Singing, too. I started a band because I wanted to write some songs and didn’t know enough singers to sing my songs. Now [it’s like], we got a show and they’re offering us $3,000 so I’m gon’ figure it out. It took probably 10 years of doing that before the worst anxiety ever started to subside.”

Syd for @thefader 🍋🇺🇸✨
Syd soundtracked so much of my wedding this year. Photographing her for Fader feels full circle.
There is something extraordinary about the clarity, grace, and freedom with which she moves through the world, and about the space her artistry creates for others to do the same. 🍋
