Your coach should not have to choose between telling you the truth and protecting your feelings. If your goals are real, you should want the truth even when it stings. The feedback that challenges you may be the feedback that changes you.

You can be disappointed and still be dependable. There will be days when you aren’t the player everyone is watching. You can still be the teammate everyone can count on. Make your team better from wherever you are.

"You've got a job to do. This is not about you. If you're nervous, that's about you. You have to serve." Pressure builds when you make the moment about you. How will I play? Will I look bad? Will I get the credit? Change the question: What can I do to make my teammates better?

If your work depends on convenience, your progress depends on luck. There will always be something easier to do. Somewhere else to be. A reason to start tomorrow. Your goals need a commitment that survives an inconvenience.

Your time in the jersey is temporary. Your impact on the standard can last. Respect the players who made that jersey mean something before you arrived. Do the work to make it mean even more when you leave.

Toughness is the standard you reveal.

You’re allowed to want a bigger role. But the role you want doesn’t excuse you from the responsibilities you have. Give your team a reason to trust you before you ask for more. Your role can change. Your dependability shouldn’t.

“Don’t ever coach a player for who they are today, you have to coach them for what you know they can become.” A coach who cares about you won’t let your current habits limit your future. That’s why they keep asking for more. They believe there’s more in you.

If coaching offends you more than losing bothers you, your priorities are backwards. Hear it. Own it. Fix it. The easier you are to coach, the harder you become to beat.

The athletes aren’t the only ones who prepare for game day. The band. The cheerleaders. The dance team. They practice too. They sacrifice too. They show up too. Sports are bigger than the people on the field. The game belongs to everyone who helps bring it to life.

Everybody wants the star role. Great teams are built by people willing to star in the role they have. You don’t need a different role to become more valuable. You need to bring more to the one you already have.

Effort is the one thing nobody can do for you. Coaches can teach you. Teammates can challenge you. Circumstances can test you. But effort has to come from within. Effort is personal. Make yours undeniable.

The fastest way to show you're not ready for more responsibility is to act like you're above the responsibility you already have. Everybody wants the big moment. Not everybody wants the work, sacrifice, and discipline that come before it. You don't earn bigger opportunities by overlooking smaller responsibilities.

Great competitors have short memories and high standards. They don't ignore their mistakes. They learn from them. You can't change what just happened. You can control what happens next. Own the mistake. Don't let the mistake own you.

Pressure doesn't expose your talent. It exposes your habits. When the moment gets big, you don't suddenly become more disciplined, focused, or prepared. You become exactly what you've practiced being. You can't train occasionally and expect to deliver consistently.

Real toughness is refusing to let your circumstances determine your contribution. Toughness is giving your team what it needs, even when you're not getting what you want.

"You're not in charge of the outcome, but you are in charge of how you can influence outcomes with your effort and energy." You may not control the outcome, but you always influence it.

“You don’t just become tough. You earn tough.” @CoachCoriClose Every difficult practice. Every uncomfortable moment. Every time you choose not to quit. Toughness isn't a personality trait. It's a practiced response.

Stop confusing doing what you're told with being committed. Anybody can work hard when the coach is standing next to them. The real test is what happens when there's no reminder, no reward, and no one checking. If someone else has to enforce your standard, it isn't yours yet.
