An Australian Army radio operator, he volunteered for special duties and joined a mission to establish a secret observation post behind Japanese lines in New Guinea. Captured, beaten and interrogated, he spent weeks in captivity. On October 24, 1943, Len and two Ambonese soldiers serving with the Netherlands East Indies forces, Pattiwahl and Reharin, were taken to Aitape Beach and executed. Their bodies were never recovered.
