Might fuck around and convince my audience that they face an immediate existential threat that I alone understand, thus motivating them to alleviate the terror I instill in them every day by amplifying my content and making them distrustful of any information source besides me.

Since January, ICE has detained and sought to deport a man to Jamaica. But an AP investigation has found documents that support claims by his lawyers that he's a U.S. citizen. apnews.com/article/ice-immig…

I talked to Sakariye Abdi Mohamed, a Somali asylum seeker who was arrested at work, while he was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. I called him again once he was deported to Mogadishu. Here's what he had to say.
In late August, the Trump administration loaded 12 Somali immigrants onto a plane and flew them to an ICE facility at Guantanamo Bay.
“Nobody tell us that we’re going to Guantanamo Bay,” Sakariye Abdi Mohamed told journalist Amanda Moore in a phone call last month from the infamous detention facility. “Just like kidnapping.”
Gitmo, Mohamed said, was “the worst place ever I’ve been in my life.”
The Department of Homeland Security has denied mistreating the Guantanamo prisoners—and it insists the Somali men sent there are “some of the worst of the worst.” But we found no evidence that Mohamed had been accused of any wrongdoing. “I don’t have no criminal record,” he told Moore. “I don’t have no tickets.”
A few weeks later, ICE deported Mohamed to Somalia—he was shackled for nearly 40 hours during the trip, he says. In a new video for Mother Jones, he provides gut-wrenching details about his time at Guantanamo and his efforts to rebuild his life in Mogadishu. DHS didn’t respond to Moore’s follow-up questions about Mohamed’s allegations. You can watch her report above.

New: we got leaked audio of Flock's CEO speaking at a police conference. He said backlash to Flock isn't real (said it's bots and paid protesters; no evidence); his wife told him to never apologize; and he may never do media interviews again. Listen: 404media.co/in-leaked-audio-…

I made my newest Patreon piece about the midterms free for everyone. The reaction that right wing influencers are having about 2026 is very different than any other Trump-era election, and I think this piece provides some pretty reassuring context.

70% of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up. He rules. theatlantic.com/technology/2…

The Department of Homeland Security is openly engaging in an unprecedented, partisan campaign to intervene in the midterm elections. My latest piece @NewYorker surveys the effort and looks at what it means at the local level: newyorker.com/news/the-polit…

I’m told Trump was embarrassed by the coverage of Zacharia’s briefing and when he polled other aides about her, Zacharia had few allies willing to stand up for her or defend her performance. The main reason he rushed to select her after growing irritated with how long the process was taking to replace Karoline Leavitt was because he wanted more people defending him on TV. When she failed to do so in a sufficient way with Sean Hannity, Trump said he knew she needed to go.

When Ukraine hit Russian data centers earlier this month, some suspected it disrupted Russian bot networks on social media. A review of our data found no evidence that's actually the case.

.@KatieZacharia is not a lawyer and has never been licensed to practice law. The @WSJ reports this evening that she took the California Bar Exam but failed.
Nevertheless, Zacharia appeared on media programs for YEARS and repeatedly called herself a lawyer.
Here's a super cut:
