It was incredible to work with Stanford, the O*NET Resource Center, and the National Bureau of Economic Research to build TaskNet.
As AI radically changes jobs in the economy, we need a better taxonomy to evaluate what it can do.
Workers in six occupations do 79 tasks the government's official occupational taxonomy has yet to add. That work is worth about $140B a year in wages.
That taxonomy is called O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor's database of the tasks each occupation involves. Workers use it to help with job transitions, and economists use it to estimate which jobs AI will change. If the lists are incomplete, so are the estimates.
Today we're releasing TaskNet, an open-source task catalog built on O*NET and updated for how AI is changing work.
Built with researchers from Stanford, the O*NET Resource Center, and NBER. Thank you to @robinsonaisaac @erikbryn @diyi_yang @jennjwang @andreas_h0wpt @Digeconlab @stanfordnlp @stanfordhai @stanfordAIlab for contributing to this work.

It's a week into the season and the NBA is averaging the most possessions per game, shortest average possession length, highest average pickup distance, and most possessions with at least three offensive players crashing in the tracking era. Playing very hard for 82 games!

Important piece thinking through the potential implications of AI cryptographic advances. Last week’s PHP vulnerabilities an early warning.

I’m hiring a Chief of Staff to be my right hand across everything I do at Cosmos.
That starts with Cosmos Institute (@cosmos_inst), the nonprofit I founded after selling two AI companies, having two kids, and thinking hard about the good life and the good society. Through the Institute, we do research internally and with fellows from @GoogleDeepMind, @AnthropicAI, @OpenAI, @Microsoft, and academia, have given out 200+ grants to build fast prototypes, and we’re launching a big new in-person bet for higher education in 2027. This side of my work also includes @UniofOxford, where I co-teach a graduate seminar on philosophy and AI and support the Human-Centered AI Lab (HAI Lab), as well as a book I’m writing on human autonomy in the age of AI.
On the venture side, you’ll work with me across Cosmos Ventures (@cosmos_vc), our new $77.6M fund backing founders building new institutions for the AI age. Our early portfolio includes companies like AIUC (@aiunderwriting), @PrimeIntellect, and Workshop Labs (acq. by @thinkymachines), with several more to be announced soon. We’re also going to be incubating new companies in 2027.
You’ll come in, do this well for two years, and if you want to build a thesis-aligned company or a nonprofit next, we will back you, or place you at a top company in our community. The role is based in Austin, with relocation provided.
To apply, read our essays and tell us where we’re wrong: docs.google.com/document/d/1…

Spent the whole day yesterday visiting Harvard Econ, and after talking with a ton of grad students, I couldn’t agree with this more. So many interesting, fresh ideas with huge implications for how we think about Econ of AI.
i feel so excited for econ majors these days — there’s so much alpha in knowing the discipline well and applying it to ai alignment
seems important to study
- game theory
- collective action problems
- invisible incentives
to better understand
- swarm behavior
- revealed preferences
- how the invisible hand guides agent behavior more than individual alignment
what are ppl reading in the overlap of these two domains?

Grateful to the excellent @tylercowen for articulating why I never found the "Who's on First" skit funny, even as a pun-lover. Tyler's close reading points out what's right there on the surface, rancorous & unpleasant (with an excellent last line point). marginalrevolution.com/margi…
marginalrevolution.com/margi…, basically the skit is not funny, but there is more there than meets the eye at first...

Today I can officially call myself an Acquisitions Editor @stripepress!
I’m looking for new projects to seed our pipeline. If you are writing or thinking about any of these, email me: [email protected]
- trust as civilizational infrastructure: what reinforces trust? what erodes it? does it have a half-life? how does its presence or absence shape economic growth, institutional resilience, and everyday life?
- parenting and the family/community ecosystems that produce smart, happy, and capable people
- branding, advertising, and how institutions cultivate soft power
- contemporary social commentary with a bite earned through obsessive observation (including essays!—who thinks they're the next Joan Didion?)
- biotech and public health, esp. from a systems-level perspective
- criticism!
As of today @stripepress officially has *two* full-time editors: myself & @_theplaza!
Eloise comes to us from Folio, where she was a literary agent and nurtured by some of the best in the business.
~1.3 million books later we’re still only *just* getting started, and have huge ambitions to grow. More job postings coming in the next few weeks for NYC-based roles 😌📚
