A post-Covid boom saw profits at the UK’s three biggest supermarkets rise by 89% in 2023 😳
While supermarket continue to make healthy profits, shoppers are still paying more for the essentials? 🛒
Food and drink prices rose by around 25% between January 2022 and January 2024. In comparison, they rose by just 9% in the entire decade before that (ONS)
Of course, not every price rise is profiteering. But big businesses have choices: they can absorb higher costs, lower prices, accept smaller profits or pass the squeeze on to workers, shoppers and suppliers.
And with major supermarkets holding huge bargaining power, it’s worth asking who really pays the price.
When food prices rise, who gets the extra money — and who gets squeezed? 👀

Over £8bn in profit in just a quarter 😳
Shell continues making huge profits - meanwhile, working people are being squeezed by soaring energy bills.
Working people shouldn’t have to choose between heating their homes and making ends meet while big oil and energy giants cash in on the back of global crises.
So, what are our choices? The government must put an END to energy profiteering and workers must secure wages that match the cost of living to stay afloat.
“In my Budget meetings with the Chancellor, I have driven home the importance of who pays, the working class cannot pay anymore, there is nothing left to give. I have focused on the cost of living crisis areas that need to be addressed and the key importance of backing British Industry. Jobs, Jobs, Jobs. Along with taxing the city banks so we can drive money into our public services and cheaper energy bills. But whatever happens in Parliament this week, our main focus as a union must be the workplace. The workplace is where our members win pay deals for our members – the tried and tested defence against the cost of living crisis." @UniteSharon

"The noose around the neck of wages, in the shape of frozen tax thresholds, must be dealt with. Started by the Tories in 2022, it is dragging workers into unfair tax bands and reducing disposable income. This cannot continue’ @UniteSharon
#Budget2026 "was the government’s first big chance to show real tangible change. The window to win back the working class will not stay open for long” @UniteSharon
As I have been saying repeatedly in my meetings with the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, our members wanted two things from this budget: money in their pockets now, and a plan for investment and jobs.
Whilst there is some welcome news in this budget – including relief on energy bills and some investment in jobs – these are baby steps rather than a decisive leap forward.

If you had been in the room, what would you have asked John Healey to include in his budget?
No one should be priced out of putting food on the table 🍽️
The government has cut tariffs on some food to give families 'breathing space’ but more needs to be done to ease years of rising living costs.
Food and drink prices rose by around 25% in just two years between January 2022 and January 2024 - for comparison, they rose by just 9% in the entire decade before that (ONS).
We went to the supermarket and compared the price of an average £10 essentials shop in 2020 today and found an increase of over £5 🫣
Working people are paying the price. How much longer can families be expected to cope?

⚡️Tackling energy costs & reigning in the profits of the energy giants would help people deal with the ongoing #CostofLiving crisis & help make industry more competitive.
"It’s time to end the chaos in our energy network which allows profiteers to flourish while workers & communities are left in the cold" @UniteSharon

Working a shift without a proper rest break is a real nightmare
Here's what you need to know about your *legal* right to breaks - and how unionising helps workers secure a better deal when it comes to their breaks, and fairer conditions 🫡
Employers should be following the law - but that's the just the bare minimum. Workers have won better conditions like paid breaks at companies like Pilgrims by standing together with our union - and you can too.
Everyone deserves proper breaks and fair working conditions, but sometimes it’s hard to get them on your own but by knowing your rights and joining together, workers have a stronger voice to negotiate better breaks, fairer rotas, safer workplaces and conditions that work for everyone 💪

Andy Burnham’s first real test is the Budget. Labour has a second chance, but hope must mean real change workers can feel.
That means money back in people’s pockets now and investment to rebuild British industry and create good jobs.
The question is simple: who pays? It’s time workers stopped footing the bill.

Workers are being pushed out of the aviation industry, while the abuse is also taking a toll on workers’ mental health.
Abuse should never be considered ‘part of the job’ but for too many airport and aviation workers, verbal abuse, intimidation, aggression and violence are a regular reality at work.
From ground handlers and passenger service assistants to security staff and cabin crew, everyone working to keep our airports and airlines running deserves to feel safe from the airport to the aircraft 📣
That’s why we’re calling for a unionised, worker-led approach to tackling abusive and disruptive passenger behaviour and protecting aviation workers.

We haven't done anything to put new industries in place. We are losing jobs and skills.
We need a plan for industry and serious investment.

Jobs gone, production offshored, communities weakened.
Steve's employer and his town are not unique. The same story can be heard all over the country, and the effects cut deep.
But it doesn't have to be like this. Government investment and a plan to reindustrialise could regenerate communities and the economy, create jobs and get us ready for the new, clean, hi-tec economy of the future.
The government could start this at the #Budget2026
😡Capita pensioners like Barry have been left waiting for months with no income, due to the incompetence of the outsourcing giant.
Even against the backdrop of the widespread failure of the outsourcing experiment - which has sacrificed service to profit - the Capita pensions scandal is a spectacular failure. And pensioners like Barry are paying the price.
Time for the government to act ⏰
Stop punishing the poor. Start taxing profits 📣
After years of working people bearing the brunt of the cost of living crisis, it’s time to make the companies raking in huge profits on the back of it pay their fair share.
London Unite community member Kay explains why we need an economy that works for working people, not just the wealthy.

😡 20 years ago, Suzanne was being bullied by her manager, so she went to see her union rep. “I told him, ‘I’m fed up. I love this job, but this woman won’t let me breathe. She keeps giving me the worst shifts & treats me horribly’,” Suzanne recalled. “He told me to join the union, & I did.” Fast forward 20 years & Suzanne is a member of Unite's executive council & is collecting an award for 20 years of service to the NHS.
🏥 “Speaking with patients and caring for them – just being there for them at a hard time in their lives – that’s what I love about the job.”
👏 Congratulations & solidarity Suzanne!
