The coronation of Henry VI was held #onthisday in 1429. The only child of Henry V and Catherine de Valois, Henry became king on the death of his father in 1422. He was just nine months old and the youngest person ever to succeed to the English throne. A regency council governed until Henry was crowned in the Abbey and vested with the powers of kingship when he was eight.

Solider and poet Wilfred Owen died #onthisday in 1918, killed on the battlefields of northern France just a week before Armistice Day. He is remembered in the Abbey alongside fifteen other poets of the First World War with this memorial stone in Poets' Corner. The quotation on the stone is taken from his Collected Poems: 'My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity.'

When we were planning the layout of our museum, The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries, we first mapped the paths of the sunbeams streaming through the windows into the trifoirum. This meant we could allow in natural daylight while protecting precious exhibits from light damage. #Museum30 #Lighting

William III was born in The Hague #onthisday in 1650. He was the son of Mary, Princess Royal, and William II, and he inherited the title of the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth. William had not been expected to become King of England, but following the breakdown of James II’s reign and the Glorious Revolution of 1688, Parliament declared that his Catholic father-in-law had abdicated, paving the way for William's accession. He reigned jointly with his wife, Mary II, who is buried alongside him in the Abbey's Lady Chapel.

Westminster Abbey is home to the Westminster Retable, England's oldest altarpiece. The retable was commissioned for Henry III's Abbey and made between 1270 - 1280. It is acknowledged to be one of the most important surviving examples of panel painting from 13th-century England. Made of painted and gilded wood and decorated with metalwork, enamel and glass, the retable would have been an opulent and beautiful work of art. It is painted with the figures of Christ, the Virgin Mary, St John the Evangelist and St Peter, and with panels depicting the miracles of Christ. The retable has suffered damage over the centuries but was rescued in 1827. In 1998 a lengthy programme of conservation work began and revealed the true splendour of this remarkable medieval treasure. The retable is on display in our museum, The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries, and you can see it when you visit us. #Museum30 #Paint
