New analysis of ancient DNA is overturning the old assumption that 'human mental traits haven't evolved in the last 40,000 years'.
This recent paper (April, 2026) analyzed genetic data from over 10,000+ ancient people from West Eurasia (Europe, Middle East, West Asia) over the last 10,000+ years, compared to 6,000+ modern people. They analyzed strength of selection for or against 9.7 million genetic variants.
They found strong positive selection for intelligence, and strong negative selection against several mental disorders -- all since the development of agriculture & more complex societies.
