I spoke with journalist and author @AnandWrites about his new book, “Man in the Mirror,” which documents the infamous 2023 killing of Jordan Neely, a homeless Black man, by former Marine Daniel Penny on the New York City subway. We discussed the ensuing reckoning over homelessness, race and mental health in America's cities:

Cities are for colliding with people unlike you. If your vision of a city is allergic to the existence of people unlike you, you may not actually like this city or any city.
This is what we do all too often: instead of having a conversation about the kind of housing policies we need and what would make life more affordable and inclusive, we snipe at our own neighbors and suggest that their mere existence in our place is problematic. It doesn’t matter who you vote for, this is a way of looking at the world more rooted in what Trump is doing than anything progressive.
This is not me taking sides with any particular theory of who belongs here. We should not be having a conversation about who has a right to be here. This is not something individuals decide about other individuals, unless you want to go in the direction of some very dark societies and history. Fight for policy that makes life better for all. Don’t take photos of people you think don’t deserve to exist in your space. It’s everyone’s.
When I wrote this in 2018, even many on the left half thought it wrongheaded.
Now Bill Kristol is saying it. Progress.

And Americans don’t want to be ruled. They are sometimes willing to roll the rice and break the glass.
But, ultimately, it was the unseriousness. If you’re going to do authoritarianism, which I don’t recommend, you’ve got to do it with focus and skill.
They just didn’t have it.
Breaking news: the word “Scaramucci” today returns to being a mere surname, not a unit of measure.

BREAKING: White House press secretary Katie Zacharia is "transitioning out" of her role, a senior White House official tells @pdoocy .
President Trump denies firing her, telling reporters, "No no. I want her to have a good life… she’s been brutalized by the media."
Trump says he encouraged Zacharia to reconsider staying in the job just minutes before speaking to reporters, telling her, "You don't have to do this if you don't want to." @AmericaRpts
