From November 2 to 6, 35 innovators from nine African countries will participate in the maiden Translational Research & Innovation Bootcamp 2026, organized by Ashesi, @YemaachiBio, and the African Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology.
Over five days, they will explore how to move promising ideas from prototypes toward commercially viable products, learning about regulation, funding, product testing, and building partnerships along the way.
Who are the innovators behind these ideas, and what are they building?
Meet the cohort.

Dalitso Ndirsa Kathyola supports innovations that make healthcare more accessible in communities where distance, infrastructure, and cost are barriers. At the @MLW_Programme, she works with the Innovation and Translation Unit, supporting three innovations: a dried blood spot kit for diagnosing central nervous system infections without a cold chain, a rapid test that detects cholera directly from stool samples, and a portable, battery-powered cooler for transporting vaccines to remote communities.

Gbolahan Oduselu is a postdoctoral researcher at the @WACCBIP_UG, where he combines artificial intelligence, computational chemistry, and medicinal chemistry to identify potential treatments for infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.
Beyond his research, he is building the Drug Discovery Innovation Hub, an initiative that mentors young scientists and promotes approaches to reduce the time and risk of early-stage drug discovery, particularly in resource-constrained settings.

Nine faculty-led research projects have been selected for Ashesi University’s inaugural Ashesi Program for Innovation, Research, and Entrepreneurship (ASPIRE) Fellowship.
The projects address challenges across Ghana and Africa, from reducing food spoilage in Accra’s vegetable markets to improving access to eye care and developing ways to detect digital fraud. Others will examine workplace conditions, legal reform, and how students learn science.
The fellowship also creates opportunities for undergraduate scholars and graduate research assistants to work alongside faculty, gaining practical research experience while contributing to projects that connect academic inquiry with real-world challenges.

Africa has made significant investments in scientific research and capacity building, yet much of its research output remains within academic institutions rather than translating into products and solutions.
The Translational Research and Innovation Bootcamp, a collaboration between Ashesi University, @YemaachiBio, and the African Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology in Zimbabwe, aims to bridge this gap by connecting research, entrepreneurship, and industry.
Watch Yaw Bediako, Dean of Research and Innovation, #atAshesi, as he shares the vision behind the bootcamp.

Ashesi, @MTN Ghana, @Leti Arts, and MiTale have partnered to launch the Ashesi Gaming and Applied Games Virtual Lab, exploring how gaming and gamification can support sectors such as education and agriculture.
The initiative builds on the work of the @Nkabom Collaborative, which supports Ashesi’s nine-week Applied Games and Gamification course through the Nkabom Collaborative Grant. The course will serve as a key pathway for students to access the Lab, develop game prototypes, and explore ways to turn promising ideas into practical solutions.
Through interdisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and experimentation, students will have opportunities to take their ideas beyond the classroom and apply technology to real-world challenges.

As AI makes it easier to generate code, how can educators tell whether students understand the concepts behind their solutions? Researchers from Ashesi, St. Olaf College, and the University of British Columbia explored this with 130 second-year Computer Science students, using an AI bot to guide students through explaining their reasoning, developing pseudocode, and analyzing their solutions before writing code.
The study shows how AI can help educators look beyond the final answer and better understand how students think, while giving students more opportunities to reflect on and strengthen their own problem-solving process.

Leaving Liberia for Ghana was a big step for Akouavi Tehoungue M’28. After her cement distribution business in Liberia collapsed, she came away with a clearer understanding of what she needed to become a stronger business leader.
Now pursuing her MBA #atAshesi, Tehoungue is gaining new perspectives on business while bringing her own experiences as an entrepreneur into the classroom. She hopes to take what she learns back to Liberia and use it to support the next generation of entrepreneurs. Read Tehoungue's story: ashe.si/46XUXYG

While working at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Henry Kofi Brandoh ’M28 developed AI tools to organize clinical notes and support medical triage. He also built Orpasser, a platform designed to make group travel easier to coordinate.
Now pursuing a Master’s in Intelligent Computing Systems #atAshesi, Brandoh is building on these experiences to deepen his expertise in machine learning and statistical modeling. He hopes to use this knowledge to develop technology that addresses complex problems people encounter every day.

Traveling across Ghana, Emmanuel Frimpong Archer M’28 saw processing industries still relying heavily on manual processes or limited automation. His five years in industrial automation at Ghana National Gas Limited Company showed him both the challenge and the opportunity.
#atAshesi, Archer is building on that experience through the Master’s in Mechatronic Engineering, where he is exploring intelligent controls and using Ashesi’s engineering laboratories to test and refine ideas. He hopes to turn this experience into affordable, tailor-made solutions that can make production more efficient across local industries in Ghana.

Seyram Letsu ’30 has spent the past few years learning what it takes to turn an idea into something people can use. At Keta Senior High School, she explored student leadership and worked with her colleagues on ideas such as an entrepreneurship club. Later, she returned to her former basic school to teach mathematics and joined a community coding program that introduced young people to computers and programming.
Now studying Mechatronic Engineering #atAshesi, she is bringing together her interests in mathematics, programming, building, and problem-solving. She does not know exactly what she will build yet. What she does know is that meaningful ideas take more than enthusiasm.

At Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare, Geraldine Namakawe Box’s fascination with airplanes began as she watched them take off and land. Years later, that curiosity has grown into an interest in aerospace engineering, with Electrical and Electronic Engineering #atAshesi serving as a foundation for her longer-term ambitions.
But Box has many interests, and she is still discovering where they might take her. She often wonders whether it is possible to pursue different interests and excel in each.
Still, one question has stayed with her longer than most, one that began at an airport in Harare as she watched machines rise into the sky.
What makes them fly?

In high school, Joseph Delali Etse M’28 wrote poems and short stories, then taught himself video, 3D animation, and game development. Those experiments led him to study Computer Science at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
While at KNUST, he co-founded Votex 365, an e-voting and e-ticketing company. Now, as the Chief Technology Officer of Orb, he is exploring new possibilities with the open-source platform he built to help people connect information across their documents and ask questions about their content.
At Ashesi, Etse is pursuing a Master’s in Intelligent Computing Systems, deepening his understanding of AI and exploring how intelligent systems can address practical problems. Read Etse’s story: ashe.si/4dBd1eU
