Thanks for picking up Connecting Scripture New Testament!
Four new books I LOVE that are really helpful for a pastor: 1) Craig Troxel’s With all Your Heart - Tackles how the mind, the affections, and the will are all to be utilized in loving Christ. Helpful for preaching and counseling. 2) Patrick Abrendroth’s The Ascension - Shows the importance and relevance of this “forgotten doctrine” on the Christian life. Great doctrinal study. 3) John Blanchard’s The Complete Gathered Gold - Literally a treasure trove of quotes relating to nearly every topic. Every pastor should own this and use in sermon preparation. 4) Christian Standard Bible - Connecting Scripture New Testament Study Bible - one of the most remarkable study Bible’s I have seen. Shows how the NT is dripping with illusions and references to the OT. Every note shows the OT connection. Every preacher should run and buy this resource.

Want to learn more about Covenant Theology and how that relates to Israel? Check out this podcast by Ligon Duncan and Nancy Guthrie. 🎙️ Note, too, that Ligon doesn't think the phrase "replacement theology" captures what covenant theologians believe. thegospelcoalition.org/podca…

Found an earlier account!! 📰 1 Cor 15:5-7 “he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”
Written account of Jesus rising from the dead identified in 2,000-year-old manuscript, study suggests trib.al/XFIwGJj
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This research compares later Greek, Latin, Arabic and Syriac copies to reconstruct what Josephus may have written around AD 93–94; it did not identify an account in a 2,000-year-old physical manuscript. joe.co.uk/news/ancient-j… wsjfreeexpression.substack.com/p/unlocking-th…

The cheapest I've seen the hardcopy of my book, From Adam and Israel to the Church. 🔴 Recounts my journey out of dispensationalism. 🔴 Attempts to organize the people of God around the "image of God" motif. 🔴 Relates inaugurated eschatology to God's people. 🔴 Final chapter concerns the covenant community in the eternal state. a.co/d/0bwuXybU

Is the "church" (ἐκκλησία) in the OT? Yes! 👍🏻 LXX Nehemiah 13:1 "At that time the book of Moses was read publicly to the people. The command was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter THE ASSEMBLY OF GOD [ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ θεοῦ]" 1 Corinthians 1:2 "TO THE CHURCH OF GOD [τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τοῦ θεοῦ] at Corinth" See GK Beale, "The Background of ἐκκλησία Revisited," JSNT 38 (2015): 151-168

The people of God begin in Eden and continue into the new heavens and earth. One God, one people. Much of the debate surrounds what the term "Israel" means. I'm convinced that the term primarily refers to one's status before God and secondarily to one's relationship to Abraham. I trace the people of God through the language of "image." You can read that TGC essay here: tinyurl.com/yc6tzxwk I wrote a book on the subject, From Adam and Israel, in case you want something more substantive I have a whole chapter on "Israel, the Gentiles, and Isaiah's Servant" in my Manger to the Throne volume. See also my long discussion of the "mystery" of the Jews/Gentiles in Eph 3 in Hidden But Now Revealed.

I've been listening to some dispensational podcasts as of late, and I keep bumping up against a problem. 🚦 According to a lot of dispensationalists, an interpreter holds to dispensationalism or "replacement theology." I'm a covenant theologian but I don't hold to replacement theology. The church doesn't replace Israel. The church is the CONTINUATION of true Israel in Christ. NT believers are joined to OT believers as the covenant community. That's not replacement.

The canonical Gospels are sourced in eye-witness testimony and were written within living memory of the events they describe. Inconspicuous indicators of eyewitnesses reveal what is happening behind the scenes more than front-and-center observations. thegospelcoalition.org/artic…

“The work of Christ, therefore, is not just to save certain individuals…The total work of Christ is nothing less than to redeem this entire creation from the effects of sin. That purpose will not be accomplished until God has ushered in the new earth” -Hoekema

Interesting stats about Passion Week. I ran the numbers in Accordance using the NA28. 🧮 This is what I came up with: Matthew devotes about 34% of his narrative to Passion Week. Mark is 35%, Luke is 22%, and John is 38%.

Thankful to sit down with @DrGladd to discuss his book, From Adam and Israel to the Church. The conversation centers on humanity as image-bearers and how a prophet-priest-king framework explains Adam, Israel, Christ, and the Church. @ivpacademic @ivpress youtu.be/YVr0TUcBZbg?si=-Ln0…
