First responders from across the United States came together Wednesday in Times Square for the 2026 Roll Call of Heroes presented by the First Responders Children's Foundation, commemorating National First Responders Day.
Among those recognized was FDNY Firefighter Travis Langan, of Ladder Company 123. Firefighter Langan was off duty when he helped rescue a woman who was trapped inside her submerged vehicle on the Jackie Robinson Parkway during severe flash flooding in May. Firefighter Langan climbed onto the vehicle, broke through the sunroof with his bare hands, and pulled the woman to safety.
Thank you to all first responders who risk their lives to help others in New York City and across the country every day.

Battalion Chief James Brennan was promoted Tuesday to the rank of Deputy Chief. He has passed four promotional exams and will now take on a new role as an incident commander on the fireground at scenes.
"To me, being a leader in the FDNY means knowing when to get involved and knowing when to step back," Chief Brennan said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of the new position. Change can be scary, but change is good."
At about 2:20 p.m., the FDNY received calls reporting a fire on a barge at a recycling facility at 4251 Boston Road in the Bronx.
Units arrived and encountered heavy fire on the barge. Members used tower ladders, marine units and handlines to extinguish the fire, which was placed under control in about two hours. The Pelham Manor Fire Department assisted the Department by supplying one of the tower ladders with water.
No injuries were reported.

Promotion days in the FDNY are celebrations of excellence, dedication and heart. Congratulations to our members who were promoted to the ranks of deputy chief and lieutenant on Tuesday at the Fire Academy.
These members are stepping into pivotal chapters of their careers as they take on the honor and responsibility of leadership in the greatest fire department in the world. As leaders, they will manage fires, guide our people and lead the brave men and women under their command.
The ceremony took place at a landmark location in FDNY history. This year, the Department marks 50 years since the first class of probationary firefighters graduated from the Fire Academy on Randall's Island. Half a century of tradition, sacrifice and strength—a legacy that continues with every new generation of FDNY leaders.
Taking the next step in their FDNY careers. 📈

The FDNY and the FDNY Foundation held the 2026 FDNY High Rise Symposium Oct. 23-25 in New York City, bringing together fire service professionals from across the United States and the world.

⚠️ Electrical fires can start in an instant.
On Oct. 22, an overloaded power strip failed and caught fire, sparking a 2-alarm fire at a home in the Bronx. More than a dozen people were injured, and multiple homes were destroyed.
✅ Always plug appliances directly into the wall and never into power strips or extension cords.
❌ Never overload your outlets or power strips.
Protect your home and your neighbors. A few simple electrical safety habits can help prevent a fire.

Saturday was a wonderful day at FDNY Headquarters as we celebrated graduates of the Youth EMS Academy (YEMSA) program!
Over the summer, these dedicated young people gained hands-on experience, built critical skills, and learned what it means to serve their community as future EMTs.
This work matters, and they do, too.
I look forward to seeing many of them continue their journey toward becoming the next generation of FDNY EMTs! 👏
A special delivery brought an unexpected surprise for FDNY EMS members outside Elmhurst Hospital in Queens on Friday night.
On Oct. 23, FDNY Paramedics Michelle Marino and Margot Loth, along with EMT Jesse Mattera, helped welcome a baby boy into the world after an Uber driver alerted Paramedic Marino that a passenger was in distress.
After quickly recognizing the woman was in active labor, the members worked together to safely assist her onto a stretcher, where Paramedic Marino helped deliver the baby boy just steps away from the hospital. Both mother and baby were stabilized before being brought into Elmhurst Hospital for further evaluation.
Our members are always thinking quickly, working together, and dedicated to caring for New Yorkers during life's most unexpected moments.
