Today I was honoured to join veterans, uniformed groups, alongside residents in Royton this year for Remembrance Sunday and to lay a wreath in memory of all those who have served and sacrificed so much in defence of our freedoms. My thanks go to the Royton Branch of the Royal British Legion for organising today’s service, to all the Cadets, Scouts and Guides who played such an important part, and to Major Eddy Hardaker for hosting the service and delivering a thought-provoking speech. It was wonderful to see so many people come together in Royton, and all who gathered across Chadderton and Oldham too to pay their respects We will remember them.

Last week’s Budget gave British families and businesses much-needed breathing space for today.  But what does that actually look like for you? Over 20 million households will receive £100 to help with your energy bills. We’ve also extended the £50 VAT cut on electricity until July 2027 and are scrapping unfair gas standing charges.  If you drive, we’ve extended the 5p cut to fuel duty to July 2027. If you’re working hard on the National Living Wage, you’ll get a pay rise of £910 a year from April. If you’re saving for your first home, our Your First Home Scheme will help 70,000 people onto the property ladder. If you’re a pensioner living on the State Pension, you won’t pay a penny of income tax. If you’re a new parent, we’re extending parental pay to more than 160,000 more mums, dads and partners, including the self-employed. And at the supermarket, we’ve cut tariffs on more than 100 everyday products, from baked beans to chocolate. These are our choices. These are Labour choices, putting you first.

Want to know more about Overnight Visitor Levy….⬇️
Combined with keeping a share of income tax and business rates, an Overnight Visitor Levy could be a game changer for West Yorkshire. Money raised and spent here, without interference from Whitehall, means we can deliver further and faster on safer streets, better transport, more vibrant communities and more to do across our region. A small contribution from visitors can help build a brighter West Yorkshire that works for all.

Workers, customers and communities should have a stake in the businesses they depend on. That’s why we’re working to double the size of the co-operative economy. @AngelaRayner sets out how the Government’s new support for co-ops will help turn that commitment into reality.

I’m sorry to hear of the death of Lord Bryan Davies of Oldham. Lord Davies represented Oldham Central and Royton as its Labour MP from 1992 to 1997, and held a number of senior parliamentary and government positions, including serving as Deputy Chief Whip in the House of Lords. He was always very kind when we spoke during my time as council leader, where he always maintained an interest in the borough, and that continued from my arrival as an MP over a decade ago. My condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues. May he rest in peace.
