Powering Kenya Power’s Future: Kenya Power Board Visit to IESR
The future of Kenya’s energy sector is being shaped through innovation, skills development and practical solutions to emerging challenges.
Yesterday, the Kenya Power Board of Directors, accompanied by the Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror FIEK and members of the Executive Committee, visited the Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR) to learn about its achievements, ongoing projects and future plans.
Led by the Director, IESR, Dr. Jeremiah Kiplagat, the visit highlighted the Institute’s contribution to developing a skilled workforce, advancing energy innovation and supporting Kenya Power’s long-term goals. 1/2

Additional EV charging stations are also in the pipeline and will be rolled out at other locations in the coming months, expanding access to charging infrastructure and supporting Kenya’s transition to cleaner mobility.
The visit reaffirmed Kenya Power’s commitment to advancing energy innovation and preparing for the future of the energy sector. 2/2

Some communities depend on off-grid stations for their electricity supply.
To keep these stations running, we regularly transports fuel to them to support continuous operations. As we approach the rainy season, we are stepping up preparations to ensure adequate fuel supplies are in place, particularly in areas where heavy rains may make access difficult.
This is part of our ongoing efforts to keep communities powered, whatever the weather.

1/2 An elderly woman, tired of relying on paraffin to light her home, made her way to the Kenya Power Kapsabet office, hoping to finally have electricity. Lovingly referred to as Gogo by the Kapsabet team, she walked into the office with quiet determination, assisted by a middle-aged woman who held her hand.
Her visit caught the attention of Josephat Mengich, an officer in the Business Development Department. The team wondered why none of her children had accompanied her or come to make the enquiry on her behalf. They would later learn that Gogo had lost her only son and was now living alone.
Despite her circumstances, she had not given up on her wish to have electricity. She had been setting aside small amounts on her Inua Jamii, and by the time she walked into the office, she had managed to save KShs. 5,000 towards the connection.
When Mengich learnt of her story, he shared it with his colleagues, proposing that they come together to help her realise this simple but deeply held wish.
2/2 The response was heartwarming. Following a site visit, verification and preparation of a quotation, the Kapsabet team came together and raised the full amount needed. The quotation has since been paid in full, bringing Gogo a step closer to having electricity in her home.
Perhaps the most touching part of her visit was what she told Mengich as she prepared to leave: "Kijana wangu, nimechoka kununua mafuta taa."
For Gogo, having electricity will mean finally being able to light her home without having to worry about buying paraffin. It is a small change that will make a real difference in her daily life.
Her story is also a reminder that sometimes, all it takes to change someone's circumstances is for another person to notice, listen and care.

As businesses expand and communities grow, the demand for electricity grows with them. Our network must be ready to keep up.
That’s why we are investing KShs.765 million in two new substations at Bomani in Kilifi County and Kwale. Nearing completion, the KShs.455 million Bomani substation will support growing demand across Kikambala, Vipingo, Kanamai, and Mtwapa, while the KShs.310 million Kwale substation will strengthen supply to Kwale town and surrounding areas, including Kinango, Tiwi, and Kombani.
Beyond adding capacity, the projects will provide alternative supply points and help improve the reliability of electricity supply in these areas.
It’s about building a stronger network that can keep pace with growth, support businesses, and keep communities powered.

We are nearing the completion of a 90-kilometre 66kV line connecting Lokichar to Lodwar. On paper, that's 90 kilometres of infrastructure worth KShs.1.01 billion.
For Lodwar, it means something much bigger: the town and its environs will connect to the national grid for the first time, giving more than 80,000 residents access to a more stable and reliable electricity supply.
