I can't keep these tears from falling from my eyes as I look out this airplane window. I'm trying not to let people around me see me cry, but I was a high school dropout, and I just passed my dissertation defense and earned my Ph.D! I am now, officially, Dr. Manuel Scott.
If this week knocked you down, hear me: falling down is not failure. Staying down is.
When you make a mistake, it doesn't mean that you are a mistake.
Don't give up. Get up.
When I was sixteen, a stranger sat down next to me on a park bench. He had a little time and a lot of care.
No machine sat down next to me on that bench. A human being did.
Teachers: technology is changing the future. People still change lives.
Third grade. Every kid in class recited the helping verbs perfectly. Then it was my turn.
My mouth wouldn't open. I decided I must be stupid.
I wasn't. I was behind, and I was hurting. Look a little closer at the quiet kid.
A cowboy in Rockwall, Texas taught me this: you can lead a horse to water and that won't make it drink. But you can put salt in its mouth to make it thirsty.
Teacher, you are the salt. Right now, with whatever limitations you have, you have the power to change someone's life.
Educators, I want to hear from you.
AI and your classroom: what worries you most? And what gives you hope?
I read these, and your answers will shape what I write and speak about next.
Why is a guy known for his story talking about AI?
My doctoral research was on how people grow when the ground shifts under their feet. Right now it's shifting under every educator I know.
Technology is changing the future. People still change lives.
By 16 I had lived in 26 places. My father was in prison, my best friend had been murdered, and I had dropped out.
Then a few caring adults stepped in. Freedom Writer. UC Berkeley. Ph.D.
One person can change the trajectory of another person's life.
My new website is live.
After 25+ years in schools in 49 states and on 6 continents, here's what I believe:
AI can change education. It can't become a student's best hope. That still takes a human being.

For a long time now we've been working on something behind the scenes.
Tomorrow, I get to show you.
See you Monday.
I dropped out of high school. And when I returned, I almost gave up again.
But my lunch lady's kindness and love helped me keep going.
I'll never forget what she did for me.
Everyone in a school has the power to change a child's life.
Even on your worst day, you can be a student's best hope.
If you're planning an event for your school or district, I'd love to bring this message to your team.

One of the most important lessons I have learned came from my father-in-law, whose 6 children from south central LA graduated from college: High Expectations Create Excellence in Children.

Your environment is shaping you right now.
Be intentional about what you let influence your thinking, habits, and future.
Change it deliberately, or it will change you.

Good communication isn’t just about speaking clearly. It’s about understanding people well enough to be understood.
That idea shapes every keynote I give.

Lately, I’ve had a lot on my mind and heart about our schools, our children, and the future we’re preparing them for.
I’ve been reading, studying, writing, praying, and wrestling with one question:
As A.I. becomes more powerful, what becomes even more important about being human?
How do we help students think, connect, create, adapt, exercise judgment, and build relationships in a world none of us grew up in?
And how do we support the educators trying to prepare them for that future while carrying so much themselves?
Somewhere in that process, I became convinced of something:
I have more I need to say.
So, even though I stepped away for a while, I’m getting ready to get back on the road.
The world has changed.
And so have I.
But one conviction keeps getting stronger:
Technology is changing the future. People still change lives.
If your school, district, or organization is wrestling with these questions too, I’d love for you to see the work I’m bringing into 2027.

A teacher changed the entire trajectory of my life.
That’s why I still believe teachers have extraordinary power to change the direction of a student’s future.

Before I step on any stage…
this is where it starts.
A quiet moment.
A simple prayer.
A reminder that I need Him—every hour.
Not just for the message…
but for the life behind it.

Failure Is the Price of Admission
Stop trying to avoid failure. Every person who ever built anything meaningful paid this price first.
Failure isn't the end of your story — it's chapter one.
