CELEBRATING FAMILY AND MEMORIES: The Notre Dame Prep lower school celebrated Día de los Muertos with a week of learning and meaningful opportunities to honor loved ones who have passed away. Led by Profe. Patricia Wyza and Profe. Estella Tapia, students explored the traditions behind this special Mexican celebration, observed Nov. 1-2, which honors the lives and memories of family members and friends who have passed. A central tradition is the creation of ofrendas, or altars, featuring photographs and meaningful objects to remember and celebrate loved ones. Students brought in photographs of their own loved ones to help create traditional ofrendas, which were displayed in the classrooms. Fifth graders also designed and crafted their own miniature ofrendas, complete with individually decorated skulls. Throughout the week, each grade contributed its own artwork inspired by the celebration: second graders made butterflies and marigolds, third graders created skeletons, and fourth graders designed colorful papel picado, the traditional decorative paper banners often displayed on ofrendas. From the vibrant marigolds and butterflies to the intricate paper designs and miniature altars, these projects offered students a hands-on opportunity to explore the traditions, symbolism and cultural significance of Día de los Muertos while celebrating the memories of those who remain close to our hearts. #WorldSchool🌎 #NotreDamePrep #NDPLowerSchool #DiaDeLosMuertos #DayOfTheDead #CulturalLearning #ExperientialLearning #Ofrendas
