This is such a good read and so true for today’s times.
A farmer, tired of rats destroying his crops and stealing his grain, came up with a clever but cruel plan. He threw a dead pig into a deep, abandoned well. Attracted by the smell, nearly 80 rats rushed into the well to feast on the carcass. At first, everything seemed wonderful. There was more than enough food for everyone, and the rats ate until they were satisfied.
But when the food was gone, they discovered something terrifying. The walls of the well were too steep to climb. They were trapped. Days passed, and hunger turned into desperation. Desperation turned into aggression. The rats that had once eaten peacefully beside one another began fighting for survival. Eventually, they began killing and eating each other.
One by one, their numbers dwindled until only a single rat remained. Its eyes were bloodshot, and it had survived by consuming its own kind. Then the farmer returned, lowered a rope into the well, and rescued the last surviving rat. But he didn't save it out of kindness or compassion.
The farmer knew the rat had learned to survive by hunting other rats. When he released it into his fields, it would continue killing its own kind instead of eating his grain. The farmer had turned his enemy into his greatest weapon.
And that is the lesson of divide and conquer. Those who control the trap don't need to fight the battles themselves. They simply create the conditions in which others turn against one another.
The rats believed their enemies were the other rats. They never realized that the true enemy was the farmer who had put them there.
The greatest danger isn't always the enemy standing in front of you. Sometimes it's the one who created the conflict and stands quietly watching you destroy each other.
Before you turn against your neighbor because of their political beliefs, ask yourself who benefits from keeping Americans divided. While we fight each other over Republican and Democrat, we may be overlooking those who profit from the conflict. Perhaps the real question isn't which side you're on, but who built the well—and why they want us fighting at the bottom of it.

In January the American government stood up and announced that the war on saturated fat was over. Then it left the limit on saturated fat exactly where it was.
The 2025 to 2030 Dietary Guidelines landed on the seventh of January with a redrawn pyramid and a genuinely startling emphasis: high quality protein, red meat, eggs, full-fat dairy. The Health Secretary said the words out loud at a press conference. Ending the war on saturated fats. For anyone over fifty-five who spent four decades being told that the butter in the fridge was a loaded weapon, it was a remarkable morning.
Read the actual document, though, and the guidance still says saturated fat should not exceed ten per cent of daily calories. The same ten per cent. The number that has sat there through every reversal, every cohort study, every decade of it. Nick Norwitz, a researcher with Harvard and Oxford behind him, noticed and said so publicly. The pyramid changed its picture. The rule underneath the picture did not move an inch.
So which is it. Either saturated fat is the thing that has been damaging you, in which case putting full-fat dairy near the base of the pyramid is reckless. Or it never was, in which case the ten per cent cap is a relic and the last forty years want explaining. It cannot be both, and the guidelines are currently, officially, both.
Watch the other side, because their reaction is the confession. Walter Willett, who co-chairs the EAT-Lancet Commission, is out arguing for one weekly serving of red meat. The Lancet ran a formal rebuttal in February. The Harvard nutrition department is fighting the new pyramid line by line. These are the institutions whose entire authority rests on having been right the first time, and they are not conceding an inch, because conceding costs them everything.
And underneath the row sits the only fact that matters to anyone reading this. Your parents were told to swap the dripping for the margarine. They did it, because a government told them to. Nobody has ever apologised, and the current position of the American state is simultaneously that the war is over and that the rationing continues.
They have spent fifty years unable to decide whether butter is food or a hazard, and every single year they have been certain.
