America's elections aren't run from one office in Washington. State lawmakers set the rules, local administrators carry them out, and federal agencies support security and enforce voting rights.
That spread of responsibility is a safeguard: no single administration, party, or company controls the whole process, and records can be checked at multiple levels.

Before results are final, election officials run them through a series of checks: equipment tested before use, ballot totals reconciled with participation records, paper ballots checked against electronic counts, and post-election audits.
In North Carolina, bipartisan teams hand-count randomly selected ballots after every election. In Georgia, all 159 counties took part in a risk-limiting audit in May 2024.
