ALT What does it mean to be intersex? “Intersex” refers to people with innate variations in bodily traits or sex characteristics (such as genitals, reproductive organs, hormone function, or chromosomes) that don’t seem to fit typical expectations of male or female bodies. “Intersex” is not a gender identity (like cisgender or transgender), gender, or a sexual orientation (like straight or gay)—the term refers to a person’s sex characteristics. Among its provisions, the Equality Act protects intersex people by prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex characteristics (including intersex traits).
