CCTV is now a ubiquitous public presence, but did you know that African-American nurse Marie van Brittan Brown invented it to protect her family at home? In 1966 she filed a patent for a movable camera displaying images on a TV screen of whoever was at the front door.
Brown invented a security system which consisted of four peepholes, a sliding camera, television monitors, and two-way microphones. This created a closed-circuit TV system for surveillance. Yes - a German engineer by the name of Walter Burch
had developed camera-monitoring systems in 1942 to observe Nazi rocket testing. But it was Brown's security system that first brought “CCTV” use into the home. Three years after filing, Brown was awarded her patent on December 2, 1969.

Today, on International Women's Day, I am so grateful for all the male allies I have known - Brad Kamcheff, Bill Bozeman, Bill Richardson, Nadim Sawaya, Paul Boucherle, and Dale Boden. I have worked with each of these men in various capacities -
- my partner in ALL - I would not be the woman I am today without his unbridled support and boundless loyalty. Thanks to these and so many other men who have been there for me and countless other women in the workplace.
Thank you for your willingness to have tough conversations and call out issues that need urgent attention. We ALL need to speak up when we see inequalities...and insist that they are addressed.
