The Labour Government promised to tread more lightly on our lives when it came to power in 2024. That was a lie. Look at what it has done. 🧵 A thread

Preet Kaur Gill MP is absolutely bang on here.
"Preet Kaur Gill, the MP for Edgbaston... “Nobody should ever be subjected to abuse because of their LGBT identity. The intentions of the bill – seeking to protect vulnerable people – are laudable. Yet there are serious concerns about the draft text that undermine what has become clear in recent research about the vulnerability of children exploring gender ideology. As the Cass Review advised, parents and guardians must have freedom to take a cautious approach when navigating sensitive topics with their children. The evidence shows that devices such as chest-binders or puberty blockers can cause long-term bodily damage. But by criminalising words that amount to ‘economic’ and ‘emotional pressure’, the bill could undermine this advice from Cass, and ensnare parents who simply want to properly examine the risks involved with early “transition”, and where appropriate, advise against rushing into the use of such serious interventions. It would be wrong if a bill created to protect vulnerable people would overreach into potentially causing unnecessary censorship of important and loving conversations within families.” "At the 2024 Labour conference, Tracy Gilbert, MP for Edinburgh North and Leith, said that introducing a ban risked “potential pitfalls” and many parliamentarians were unaware of the risks" telegraph.co.uk/gift/55e9458…

Baroness Fox is a real asset to Parliament, thank God she is all over this assault on jury trial and delivering such a well researched and forensic speech. Shifting serious offences to the Magistrates Court is a serious mistake. The Government must think again.
Andy Burnham has gained plaudits for stopping David Lammy's attack on Juries. But this is misinformation - juries are still under threat in the Courts and Tribunals bill. I tried to explain why it matters.

The anti-Muslim hostility definition has had a chilling effect on free speech. Since its publication in March, it has been used to silence people who wish to criticise, debate or mock Islam — including private citizens, politicians and comedians. It has made it harder to speak about issues such as Islamist extremism and the grooming gangs scandal. Labour has revived Britain’s blasphemy laws for Islam alone, by the back door, 18 years after Parliament abolished them. Angela Rayner appointed five people to the Working Group tasked with developing the definition. Each of the five members had troubling links to Islamist organisations, and the Government will not say who it consulted as part of its call for evidence. So who on earth will it appoint as its “anti-Muslim hostility” tsar? The Free Speech Union does not have high hopes. Labour is chasing the Muslim vote after hampering support over recent years in Muslim communities. It is sacrificing our right to criticise religion on the altar of electoral ambition. It is both sinister and shameless.
New: Angela Rayner has told Muslim leaders today that the government will appoint its Anti-Muslim Hostility adviser later this week

Parents should not face up to five years in prison for having important conversations with their children. What country are we even living in? Andy Burnham must drop this bill. It is an assault on free speech and religious freedom. Sign @SpeechUnion’s petition calling on Burnham to drop this divisive Bill 👇

Opposition to the conversion practices bill is growing in parliament as people start to recognise the consequences.

Today, the Courts and Tribunals Bill came before peers in the House of Lords. It includes controversial plans to restrict our ancient right to trial by jury. Andy Burnham has sacked David Lammy and dropped his plans for judge-only trials. Yet ministers still claim that removing the right to elect a jury is the most effective way to reduce the Crown Court backlog. The Institute for Government says the reforms would save just 2% of Crown Court time — not the 20% ministers promised. FSU research has also found that people charged with speech-related offences are almost twice as likely to be acquitted in a Crown Court with a jury than in a magistrates’ court without one. Andy Burnham has been warned to expect a rebellion from Labour peers over these plans. And so he should. Watch FSU Campaigns Officer @MaxHThompson 👇

Don't be fooled by the Conversion Practices Bill. Its name alone manipulates the public to believe that horrific abuse of LGBT people is somehow still legal, and that this bill is needed to criminalise it. Obviously the abuse of LGBT people, such as electric shock treatment or corrective rape and so on, is already illegal. So what are they trying to criminalise? Honest conversations between children and adults who care for them. They define 'conversion practice' as "causing the individual to have or not to have" or "believe that they have or do not have, a transgender identity or a particular transgender identity". If you do not affirm a child's 'gender identity' you could face up to 5 years in prison. This is not only an attack on freedom of speech, but it is anti-gay. A bill that purports to protect gay people will actually harm them. We know that gender nonconformity is far more common in children who are same sex attracted. Hence the vast majority of children who identify as 'trans' are also same sex attracted and are confused as to why they don't fit the stereotypes for their sex. Sign the petition below.

ISLAM-RELATED CASES HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED Since Labour came to power in July 2024, cases involving people punished for criticising or mocking Islam have more than doubled as a proportion of the cases we handle. This is largely due to the Government’s decision to introduce an official definition of Islamophobia, repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility”. Public and private sector organisations are endorsing the definition zealously. It has become a de facto blasphemy law for Islam in a country that abolished blasphemy laws 18 years ago. Islam-related cases have now overtaken gender as our single biggest category of cases, although we continue to receive countless pleas for help from people punished for their lawful gender-critical beliefs. The second reading of the Courts and Tribunals bill in the House of Lords will be at around 4:00 today.
Replying to @Joanna__Hardy
Fourth, do you really think this is going to speed things up? The Mags backlog is huge and growing. The Crown Court backlog is showing signs of stabilising AND a whole host of measures have arrived recently that will begin to bite. They’re moving one queue to another.

📣 Free speech on university campuses is under threat. The Free Speech Union has helped defend countless students who have been ostracised by their peers, hounded off campus, silenced and punished for holding and expressing their lawful, legitimate views. University should be a place where free speech and open debate are not just allowed but actively encouraged. If you’re a student, take advantage of our discounted FSU Student Membership before the offer ends on 31 October. It’s just £14.99 — 50% off!
