The approval of Jackdaw will not lower our household energy bills, nor will it make us more resilient in the face of climate breakdown.

It will however, further damage trust in democracy, as ‘no new oil and gas' was promised just 2 years ago.
If the Government approve Rosebank too, this will only signal an end to the ambition for a green transition.

I cannot support this.

Approving the drilling of Jackdaw is the wrong decision on every front. It won't bring down bills, it creates barely any jobs, and it undermines our climate commitments. True energy security comes from rapidly expanding homegrown renewables, not continuing our reliance on volatile fossil fuels. The idea that we need more drilling to fund them is exactly what the fossil fuel lobby wants us to believe.

An absolutely terrible decision on Jackdaw. It will do nothing to lower people's energy bills or improve our energy security. Investing in renewable energy is the way to do that. The Government has got this badly wrong. It must not repeat the same mistake with Rosebank.

Jackdaw WON'T: - Have any meaningful impact on UK energy security - Bring down our energy bills - Stop the decline in the North Sea jobs New oil and gas fields are simply not compatible with safe climate limits. Labour MUST reject Rosebank

Official data has revealed that between July 2025 and July 2026, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero ministers met almost five times more often with fossil fuel giants Shell and BP than with fuel poverty groups and charities. Over the course of the year, ministers met with Shell and BP 23 times, while fuel poverty campaigners were offered just 5 meetings. (1/2)

REMINDER: More drilling makes next to no difference to our energy security. Rosebank's oil will overwhelming be exported and sold to the highest bidder. Approving this huge field would just keep us hooked on volatile oil and gas for far longer than necessary.

The only way to solve this permacrisis of high energy bills is to get off fossil fuels by making sure every household and business can benefit from the switch to renewable energy.

Delek Group, an Israeli energy giant known to operate in illegal settlements in the West Bank, is set to receive £200+ million if Rosebank is approved. So we've sent a letter to Burnham - warning him that approving Rosebank could breach his new sanctions. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmrl…

REMINDER: The world already has far more oil and gas than can ever be safely burned if we are to limit warming. More North Sea drilling will do nothing to cut our energy bills, and make no meaningful difference to UK energy supply - but it will escalate climate harm.

When we are already seeing the impacts of climate change, it would be deeply irresponsible for this government to knowingly worsen climate impacts by allowing new oil and gas projects.
