I saw this in a super market today in France. Someone in the marketing department either deserves a raise or the sack: 🫣😂

They won. And democracy won with them! 🇷🇸🇪🇺 A historic victory for Serbia’s students! Their extraordinary courage, determination and refusal to surrender have defeated authoritarianism. Bye bye, Vučić! We warned you: you would follow your friend Orbán into political defeat.
SERBIA: TONIGHT BELGRADE IS CLOSER TO BRUSSELS The European Democratic Party welcomes the victory of the Student List (Studentska lista) in the parliamentary election held in Serbia on 25 October 2026. The result ends more than a decade of dominance by Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party and gives the country a new chance on its European path. “An extraordinary victory for democracy, for freedom and for the future of Serbia!” said @sandrogozi , Renew Europe MEP and Secretary-General of the EDP. “This incredible result is the achievement of an entire generation of young people who had the courage, determination and strength to convince citizens of all ages that change was not only necessary, but possible.” democrats.eu/news/serbia-ton…

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump and his family have lost surprise elections, thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

“Events are conspiring to boost Le Pen and distract from her problems and failures,” said Mujtaba Rahman, an analyst who specializes in Europe at Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy. He told clients last week that he now expected Ms. Le Pen to win the election, a shift from his view that a centrist candidate would edge her out in the second round of France’s two-round system. “The centrist candidates are being dragged down by association with Macron,” Mr. Rahman said. While this could change again, he said, “As things stand, everything seems to favor radical change and Le Pen.” nytimes.com/2026/10/25/world…

Just like 🇬🇧Reform slipping behind in the polls, 🇩🇪AfD is now also "falling to its lowest level in months"👇 Looks like far right parties with dodgy finances are losing their appeal (with Trump's totally corrupt 🇺🇸 administration also serving as a wake-up call)

Ils ont semé la peur. Ils ont semé le désordre. Ils ont semé le doute. Ils ont tout fait pour que cette journée de mobilisation soit un échec. Et nous avons apporté la meilleure des réponses. Pacifiquement. En masse. Un mouvement se lève partout. Je suis si fière ce soir.

Absolutely agree with @marie2monaco @BBCNewsNight @timothy_stanley is talking nonsense, bringing the UK obsession with "migrants" into a French debate. How on earth can anyone tell that someone caught looting on CCTV, with a face mask, is a "migrant" ? Immigration is obviously an issue in France, as elsewhere, but the arrests so far have been mainly of French citizens - some with immigrant backgrounds - no official information whatsoever indicating 𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒍 immigrants ("migrants") were in any way behind the looting. To conflate the UK media obsession with "migrants" and present it as fact concerning what's happening in France just serves to whip up domestic anger and fan the flames for Reform
“It’s partly to do with a politics that ends up becoming divided by ethnicity.” “It is really not a big issue at the moment and France is a diverse country.” Telegraph columnist, Tim Stanley, and French broadcast journalist, Marie Billon, talk to #Newsnight following President Trump’s assertion that “The migrants have taken over France.”

This article explains the shocking violence we’ve seen on French streets & the way that the forces of law & order escalate so quickly to maximum violence, with the State lining up behind them to grant almost total impunity. Human rights? No thank you. theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

I don’t think Europeans fully appreciate what is happening to the European Union right now. The EU is under an extraordinary, multi-front assault, both from outside and from within. And I struggle to think of another period in its history when so many powerful actors had an interest in weakening it simultaneously. Russia has spent years waging hybrid warfare against Europe. Weaponised migration, sabotage, cyberattacks, coordinated disinformation campaigns, bot networks and political interference. The objective is clear: undermine trust in democratic institutions, deepen social divisions and weaken European unity. China has different motivations, primarily economic and geopolitical. A fragmented Europe is easier to pressure, easier to negotiate with individually and less capable of defending its economic interests. And then there is the United States. Perhaps the most disturbing development of all. Under Trump and MAGA, a country that helped rebuild the old continent and then spent decades supporting European integration now has an administration openly hostile to much of what the EU represents. Its own National Security Strategy even calls for cultivating resistance to Europe’s current political direction. Think about that for a moment. Meanwhile, within Europe, parts of the far right and far left amplify these divisions, whether through ideological alignment, political opportunism or outright sympathy for authoritarian regimes. This doesn’t mean Russia, China and MAGA are all following some jointly coordinated master plan. They don’t have to. Their interests increasingly overlap, and Europe’s internal divisions make their work considerably easier. What makes this particularly alarming is what is actually at stake. For all its flaws, the EU remains one of the world’s most consequential projects built around liberal democracy, the rule of law, individual freedoms and cooperation between nations. At a time when authoritarianism is gaining ground and even longstanding democracies are showing disturbing tendencies, that matters enormously. Europe is far from perfect. Its bureaucracy, indecision and inability to act decisively are real problems. But the answer cannot be to retreat into 27 competing nation-states, each too small to meaningfully influence a world increasingly dominated by continental powers. Quite the opposite. Europe needs deeper integration, stronger common institutions, genuine strategic autonomy and the political courage to defend its interests and values. Because fragmentation is precisely what so many external actors want. And perhaps that’s the central irony of our time: people are being deliberately manipulated into believing that the reverse is true — that national identity and sovereignty can only be protected by weakening European cooperation. In reality, a divided Europe is less sovereign, less secure and far easier for outside powers to pressure. Therefore the very thing that will make Europe stronger is the thing its adversaries are working hardest to prevent. A united Europe is a geopolitical power. A divided Europe is a collection of countries waiting to be played against one another.
