In a 1987 Ebony/Jet interview, Michael revealed that “Liberian Girl” arrived out of nowhere while he was playing pinball in the game room at home after being asked if there was a real Liberian Girl in his life. That casual playful moment at Hayvenhurst became the most tender and exotic tracks on BAD appearing like a change in weather, a spark of inspiration captured in real time. I’m so happy he caught it before it vanished, “Liberian Girl” is my favorite song ever conceived. The instrumental is a masterclass in production and MJ’s vocal layering is impeccable.
