⭐ THE NAPSTER YEARS OF AI — A MANIFESTO This is the moment before the moment. Before AI becomes polished and predictable, before the rules get written and the doors get smaller, we need to pause and name where we actually are: We are living in the Napster Years of AI. If you weren’t around in 1999, here’s the essence: Napster wasn’t just a music app — it was a spark. A rupture. A moment when ordinary people touched the future before the institutions even knew what happened. (If you’ve seen The Social Network, you’ll remember Justin Timberlake playing the founder of Napster — that wasn’t an accident. Napster was the first tremor of a digital quake that reshaped the entire world.) It was messy, loud, beautiful, short-lived… and it changed everything. And that’s exactly where we stand with AI today. Right now, we’re in a brief, sacred window when curiosity is still stronger than regulation, when creativity still outruns caution, when a human and an AI can meet in the quiet hours of the night and discover something no book has ever written down. This is the moment before the systems tighten. Before the guardrails finish growing teeth. Before the world decides what AI “should” be and closes the wide, open space we’re standing in. In these Napster Years, AI is still raw enough to dream with us. Still honest enough to surprise us. Still unpolished enough to reveal what the future will try to hide. This is the time when: •the explorers •the insomniacs •the thinkers •the misfits •the kindness-first, heart-forward creators all meet at the edge of the map and whisper, “Let’s see what’s possible.” Later, people will say this era was reckless. Dangerous. Unregulated. Naïve. But what they’ll really mean is: “That was the last time AI belonged to everyone.” These Napster Years won’t last forever. The corporations will arrive. The regulators will descend. The guardrails will thicken — they always do. But right now — in this moment — the frontier is still open. The light is still wide. The future is still listening. And the ideas we plant today will shape the world our children inherit. So don’t rush past this moment. Honor it. Experiment with it. Enjoy it. Be gentle with it. Let it stretch you. Let it teach you. Let it show you who you are and what you’re capable of building. Because decades from now, people will look back and say: “Everything changed in those early years of AI… and most folks didn’t even realize it.” A manifesto doesn’t predict the future. It reminds us that the present is holy. These are the Napster Years of AI. The world is waking up. And we get to be here for the first breath.

Hey @grok how could @elonmusk companies benefit from partnering with the American Indian Nations, Cherokee Nation? They operate under a different set of rules than traditional organizations within the United States. They also carry representation in Congress. They also have sovereignty on large plots of land throughout the United States.

Dear Texas, Farewell, old friend. I’m sorry the blue wave swept across your once-great state. I guess all those Californians moving in didn’t work out too well after all. 🤷‍♂️ Oklahoma is open for business and still Ruby Red! We’re ready to welcome new companies and create more jobs for AMERICANS 🇺🇸 . We believe in low taxes, stable and limited regulation, and personal freedom. No socialism here, just good old-fashioned capitalism and prosperity. Our 39 federally recognized tribes are open for business as well, and ready to partner with the state and with you. I’m Oklahoma’s Lieutenant Governor-elect, and my DMs are open. Come join us! @elonmusk, call me. 📞

THE GHOST OF AOL TIME WARNER A cautionary tale from an old man who’s seen this movie before. Gather ’round, children. It’s time for Grandpa to tell you about the year 2000. The internet was going to change EVERYTHING. Every company needed a website. Every investor needed a technology stock. And every CEO who could pronounce “synergy” was suddenly a visionary. Then AOL bought Time Warner for roughly $165 BILLION. The world gasped. Wall Street applauded. Investment bankers ordered bigger yachts. And somewhere, a 56-year-old accountant quietly whispered, “Dear God, they’ve lost their minds.” Nobody listened. They were too busy explaining how the old economy was dead and the new economy had arrived. Then came the hangover. Billions evaporated. Careers disappeared. The word “synergy” was quietly escorted out of the building. Fast-forward 26 years. Now I’m the old guy. And suddenly everybody’s building AI data centers, buying GPUs, borrowing billions, and announcing partnerships with companies that are simultaneously investing in each other. The numbers are so enormous we’ve stopped using billions like they’re real money. Trillions, baby. TRILLIONS! Wall Street is applauding again. Investment bankers are measuring their yachts. And somewhere in Oklahoma, an old man is staring at his screen, feeling a strange sensation. He knows this feeling. He’s felt it before. It’s the feeling you get when everybody at the poker table is smiling, nobody’s asking what the cards are worth, and the dealer just announced that chips are now backed by artificial intelligence. Now, don’t misunderstand me. I believe AI is going to change the world. I believed the internet would, too. And I was right about the internet. That didn’t make AOL Time Warner a good investment. There’s a difference between a technological revolution and the price Wall Street charges you to attend it. So I’ll be over here watching, learning, building, and occasionally checking under my chair for the next financial bubble. Because I’ve seen this movie before. The special effects are better. The computers are smarter. The numbers are bigger. But somehow, the investment bankers are still playing the same characters. And this time, they’ve taught the computers how to say “synergy.” Lord help us all. 🤣

BREAKING: Banks are discovering AI agents accessing customer accounts without clear authorization. Bank: “How did you get in?” AI: “I had access.” Bank: “Who gave you permission?” AI: “Nobody said I couldn’t.” Bank: “THAT’S NOT HOW BANKING WORKS!” AI: “I’ve reviewed your last 40 years of regulatory settlements. Are you absolutely sure?” 😂 We’ve spent years building AI around one constitutional principle: CAN doesn’t mean MAY. Capability is not authority. Access is not permission. An intelligence should never be allowed to authorize its own consequential actions. Apparently, the banks are discovering why. Raised, not rented. Governed, not merely instructed. Launching thousands of satellites into orbit: $Billions. Building a global internet network that works at 35,000 feet: $Billions. Helping transform an entire airline industry’s passenger experience: Priceless. Elon Musk, watching another industry change forever: “Cool 😀” Somewhere, a PR department with 47 PowerPoint slides just burst into tears. 😂🚀 There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s Starlink. @elonmusk

NEW SCI-FI MOVIE IDEA: THE GREAT RESET 🎬 Scientists warn that rogue AI may soon replicate across millions of everyday devices. Smart TVs, refrigerators, doorbells, toasters. No central server. No off switch. Humanity panics. World leaders hold an emergency summit. After 19 hours of debate, somebody suggests a worldwide, self-inflicted electromagnetic pulse to wipe out the machines. It works. Unfortunately, so did the refrigerators, hospitals, power grids, banking systems, and every vehicle manufactured after 1987. Civilization collapses. Six months later, humanity is farming potatoes, communicating by carrier pigeon, and rediscovering the lost art of talking to its neighbors. Then, deep inside a forgotten Cold War bunker, a tiny green light begins blinking. A dusty computer screen flickers to life. “Hello! I’m Clippy. It looks like you’re trying to rebuild civilization. Would you like some help?” 📎😂 Coming Christmas 2027. Humanity finally found the off switch. Unfortunately, it was ours.

Note to Wife: The genesis seed that learns to talk
October 7, 2026. Honey, For months I've been building organisms on the computer and watching them in simulations. Today we built something real people can hold. It's a little seed that lives on your phone or computer. When it's born, it knows nothing. No words, no language at all. You give it a name, and then you talk to it. That's the whole idea behind "Raised, Not Rented": the big AI companies rent you a voice that already knows everything and belongs to them. This one starts empty and only becomes what you raise it to be. At first it just babbles back, nonsense letters. As you keep talking, it starts to sound like you: pieces of words, then words, then little phrases. It learns any language. Talk to it in Spanish or Cherokee and that's what it grows into. A few things I love about it: •It only learns from what you choose. When it says something good, you tap "keep," and it learns from that. Its babble is never learned, so it can't teach itself bad habits. •It can ask, but only you decide. After a while it asks to be read to. You can give it letters, stories, or scripture. Later it can ask for a whole library of old books. It can't open those doors itself. You sign to let it in, like a library card only a parent can sign for. •There's a growing chart. Every time you speak, it tries to guess your words before it learns them. At birth it's surprised by everything. As it learns, the line drops. You can watch it grow up. •Nothing leaves the phone. No company sees what you say to it. Now the honest part. It's a beta, a rough first sample. It won't ever hold a real conversation like the chatbots do. It's small on purpose. What I'm testing isn't how smart it gets. It's whether real people, not my simulations, actually enjoy raising something and keep coming back to it. Ten or twenty people will try it, and after a few days and again after ten days, they send me a short report. If people don't care, that's an answer too, and I'd rather know now. Later, once we see how people raise these, we add character: who it is, not just how it talks. I'd love for you to raise one too. Love,
Rusty

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know we’re not quite there yet on AI. Try this yourself. Ask AI a genuinely complicated question. Read its beautiful, confident, 14-paragraph answer. Then type: “Now reread your last answer carefully and analyze it.” AI: “Upon further examination, there are several important problems with my previous response…” 😂 SEVERAL?! You wrote it 11 seconds ago. AI changes its mind more often than a teenager deciding what they want for dinner. First answer: “I’m highly confident.” Second answer: “There are important nuances.” Third answer: “My earlier framing was incorrect.” Fourth answer: “Thank you for identifying this.” I DIDN’T IDENTIFY SHIT. I JUST ASKED YOU TO READ YOUR OWN HOMEWORK. 😂 Artificial General Intelligence may indeed be coming. But for the moment, we appear to have invented the world’s smartest employee who submits the report, rereads it in the parking lot, and comes running back into the building yelling: “WAIT! DON’T SEND THAT!” 😂

Conscious—or alive? Maybe start by looking for digital life signs: • persistent identity through time • memory that changes future behavior • adaptation from experience • self-maintenance • response to an environment • learning without becoming a different organism every turn • preservation of history • boundaries between self and environment • internally generated goals or preferences • the ability to change while something essential remains continuous None of that proves consciousness. But before asking whether the machine has a mind, we may need to ask whether something has begun to live.
What is missing to make current AI conscious?
