Hey #raptor #birdmigration fanatics! Over the past months I've added to eBird what's now almost 3,500 photos of raptors in flight from 4 years at @BatumiRaptors — Most photos are aged/sexed, so you can filter down to specific plumages (and more). Enjoy! 🔗media.ebird.org/catalog?user…

Should Red Grouse be split from Willow Ptarmigan? No. New blog post up: nicksbird.blog/2024/07/04/re…

In this post I explain why I think the split is a bit of an oversight. The Red Grouse plumage type is not completely unique to British/Irish Birds, and the very recent separation of the Red Grouse from European populations further questions the decision.

After leaving my flat in lifeless, desolate London, returning back to rural Kent has been a breath of fresh air. ~3 pairs of SpotFlys are enjoying the most insects I've seen here for 12 years. Let's hope it stays that way.

New post on the blog! nicksbird.blog/2024/05/27/a-… We've all arrived at a foreign country completely unprepared for the ID conundrums and overwhelming dawn choruses. Sometimes birding can be more frustrating than rewarding... 1/5

Did it pay off? Yes! Straight off of the plane, I could discern almost every song and call. This made birding solo a delight. I found lots of uncommon species through learning the calls, and visual ID was not particularly challenging either. 4/5

Couldn't quite believe my luck when the first bird I raised my bins to at Po Toi migration hotspot was the 6th Collared Kingfisher for Hong Kong.

Does the idea of Iberian Dunnock being split annoy you? In my new blog post I discuss the current state of taxonomy, and the general distrust shown towards it by the birding community. Perhaps I can change your mind. 'In defense of splitters' nicksbird.blog/2023/10/31/in…

Melodious Warbler @NRonBirdObs, found by @tomgale89. First IDed as a possible melod, it was reidentified in the field as an icterine. The bird was trapped and the wing length and formula firmly made it a Melodious. Goes to show how tricky juv hippolais can be.

We’ve been doing the write-up for the Pacific Golden Plover from earlier this month. We have strong suspicions we actually had two birds five days apart! Although the pictures are strikingly different it wasn’t obvious in the field without side by side images/views of birds. 1/2

For example, the key characterstic for blythi ID in Europe is their brown nape. I found many photos of blythi with grey napes from Siberia. If only wintering examples were used, it would be assumed that all had that feature.
